■動画：HTC Heroの新Android UI、ウィジェット特盛り

下に掲載した動画はHTCの次期 Android携帯 HTC Heroに搭載されるという新ユーザーインターフェース。現行のAndroid UIも左右に広がるホームスクリーン上にショートカットアイコンだけでなくウィジェットを配置できますが、こちらの動画では天気予報に始まってTwitterや流れる株価ティッカー、写真やコンタクトショートカットなどなどウィジェット濃度が危険な領域にまで上昇しています。

動画を紹介しているPhonedogによると、この動画のビルドとファイルはxdadevelopersの"Haykuro"氏が公開したもの。これが搭載されるというHTC Heroの存在すらまだ公式に確認されてはいないため、この新 UIがうわさのAndorid 2.0 (カップケーキの次はドーナツ？)なのかも不明です。ただ動画中に「HTC Widget」の追加というメニューがあることからすると、Windows MobileでいうTouchFLO 3DのようなHTC独自の追加UIなのかもしれません。

下に掲載した動画はHTCの次期 Android携帯 HTC Heroに搭載されるという新ユーザーインターフェース。現行のAndroid UIも左右に広がるホームスクリーン上にショートカットアイコンだけでなくウィジェットを配置できますが、こちらの動画では天気予報に始まってTwitterや流れる株価ティッカー、写真やコンタクトショートカットなどなどウィジェット濃度が危険な領域にまで上昇しています。

■パナソニック、世界初のClass 10 SDHCカードを発表

欧州パナソニックが、世界で初めてSDスピードクラス10に準拠したSDHCカード「GOLD」シリーズを発表しました。SDスピードクラスは最低保証データ転送速度を示す数値。高ビットレートの動画撮影などで記録が追いつかなくなることを避けるため、「調子が良ければ」の最大転送速度ではなく、一定の操作条件に基づいて計測される最低保証速度を示す規格です。従来はClass 6 (6MB/s)までが定められていましたが、今回登場するClass 10はSDカード規格 v3.0に含まれるもの。(つまりこれ以前には最低転送速度が速いカードであっても、規格としてClass 10がなかったため表示できなかった)。

プレスリリースによれば、新たに発表されたGOLDシリーズは容量 8GB / 16GB / 32GBの2種類。最大転送速度22MB/sとなっています。PCへのデータ転送も速くなり、大容量のAVCHD フルHDビデオデータを既存のClass 4カードより約40%速く転送可能。Panasonic GOLDシリーズは欧州向けに6月から販売開始の予定です。

欧州パナソニックが、世界で初めてSDスピードクラス10に準拠したSDHCカード「GOLD」シリーズを発表しました。SDスピードクラスは最低保証データ転送速度を示す数値。高ビットレートの動画撮影などで記録が追いつかなくなることを避けるため、「調子が良ければ」の最大転送速度ではなく、一定の操作条件に基づいて計測される最低保証速度を示す規格です。従来はClass 6 (6MB/s)までが定められていましたが、今回登場するClass 10はSDカード規格 v3.0に含まれるもの。(つまりこれ以前には最低転送速度が速いカードであっても、規格としてClass 10がなかったため表示できなかった)。

We've been bumping into the new BlackBerry Storm 2 for quite a while now on the so-called "information superhighway," but we've finally had a chance to escalate those encounters and spend a few sweet moments with a live unit in the flesh. First off, unfortunately for us -- and consequently for you -- the Verizon-branded dual-mode GSM / CDMA unit that we got our hands on has an issue where we're unable to click through the license agreement that pops up when the device starts, effectively locking us out of the OS. With that said we can tell you what we do know: it is a leap from the previous Storm incarnation with sleeker style, more heft, and a display that doesn't rattle about which immediately makes the Storm 2 feel a wee bit higher end. ■パナソニック、DLNA・YouTube対応BDプレーヤDMP-BD60を発売

パナソニックからBlu-rayプレーヤーの新モデル「DMP-BD60」が発表されました。同社のレコーダー製品で実績のある高精度色信号処理技術「新リアルクロマプロセッサ」を搭載しています。映像では1080 / 60p・1080 / 24p出力、ディープカラー出力、x.v.Color出力にそれぞれ対応。音声ではDolby Digital Plus、Dolby TrueHD、DTS-HDに対応しています。(もちろん、それぞれ対応テレビ、ケーブル、アンプを利用の場合）。また圧縮時に失われた高調波成分を復元する「新マルチチャンネル デジタル リ.マスター」も搭載します。(サンプリングレートが48kHz以下のコンテンツに有効)。

高画質・高音質に加えた特長はネットワーク機能が充実している点。DLNAに対応しており、レコーダやPCなどDLNAサーバに保存した映像を再生できます。コンテンツ保護規格であるDTCP-IPもしっかりサポートするため、たとえばディーガに保存した地デジ番組もそのまま再生可能。さらに同社の海外モデルではテレビ側に載せているしているYouTube動画再生機能も搭載しました。SD / SDHCメモリーカードスロットでは、カードに保存したAVCHD / AVCHD Lite動画の再生も可能。出力端子はHDMI / D端子 / コンポーネント / コンポジット、光デジタル音声(50Mbps) / アナログ音声出力。ほかにはVIERAリンク対応、待機時消費電力0.4Wなど。価格はオープンプライス / 店頭予想 5万円前後。発売は今月25日の予定です。

■安価・シンプルなタブレットPC「CrunchPad」、まもなく登場？

TechCrunchのMichael Arringtonが突然、なぜ誰もウェブ用の安いタブレットPCを出さんのや、誰もやらんのやったら自分で作るわ、と言い出したのが昨年夏のこと。そうして始まった通称「CrunchPad」の開発が、いよいよ最終局面に近付いています。掲載したリーク写真はなぜかTechCrunch自身がPosterousに投稿したもの。リーク報道側がリークされるという珍しいパターンです。

TechCrunchのこれまでの発表をおさらいすると、CrunchPadは安価・シンプルなタブレットPCを目指すもので、1024x768の12インチ・シングルタッチ・スクリーン、1GB RAM、4GBフラッシュドライブ、WiFi、画面の縦横切り替えを行う加速度センサ、VGAカメラというスペックを計画しています。OSはUbuntuで、カスタマイズされたWebkitベースのウェブブラウザを搭載する予定です。CPUはプロトタイプ版ではVia Nanoでしたが、今回はAtomという情報もあり。価格は$200から$300くらいになる見込みです。もしすべて実現するのであれば、大きめデジタルフォトフレームや、Chumbyの父親分としても十分ニーズがあるのではないでしょうか。

■Amazon.com、Xbox LIVEアーケードのコード販売を開始

米AmazonがXbox LIVE アーケードゲームの取り扱いを開始しました。Xbox LIVE アーケード(XBLA)といえばXbox 360のゲームマーケット画面から直接購入できるダウンロードゲーム群ですが、アマゾンが販売するのはダウンロート用のコード。つまりXBLAゲームを含めた各種ダウンロードコンテンツを購入するための仮想通貨マイクロソフトポイントのプリペイドカードのように、長い英数字のダウンロードコードをあらためてXbox 360側で入力するという流れになります。

価格は通常のマイクロソフトポイントと変わらないため、ゲーム機から直接購入するより特に安くもないのに二度手間がかかる仕組みともいえます。この戦略を始めた理由については、マイクロソフトXbox Live事業GMのChristina DeRosa氏いわく、「(アマゾンは) デジタル流通をより主流にすることに貢献している企業」だから。つまり子供が「ゲームのなんとかサービスに登録するからクレジットカード貸してよ」と頼むより、アマゾンで売っているこれ買ってよ、と頼んだ方が親の財布は緩いだろうという狙いです。

また価格はおなじでもアマゾンのポイントが使える、このアイテムを買った人は〜のお薦めがXBLAゲームとほかの製品をまたいで可能になる、Xbox LIVEにプリペイドコードを追加したりクレジットカードからMSポイントを買い足すよりアマゾンでクリックしてしまう方が障壁が低い、ウェブでXBLAゲームを紹介して購入リンクを張れるといった要素も当然考えられます。Xbox 360本体のマーケットプレースもNXEアップデートでいくぶんマシになっては来ましたが、コントローラでメニューを辿るよりマウスでブラウズするほうが楽という向きには便利なサービスです。次はマルチプレイ用のライセンスまとめ買い割引をお願いします。

追記：そういえば ウェブ版のマーケットプレースもありました(昨年のNXEの予告記事)。マイクロソフトの純正よりアマゾンでブラウズする方が楽という向きには、に訂正させていただきます。

■タッチスクリーンを押せる・つまめるタンジブルUI 「SLAP」

さまざまなインタフェースがタッチスクリーン化する昨今ですが、その使い勝手は賛否両論です。タッチスクリーンは見た目を動的に切り替えられるという強みがある一方、物理的な手がかりがないのは大きな弱点。そこでドイツ・アーヘン工科大学のメディア・コンピューティング・グループが作り上げたのが、従来のボタンのように物理的な手がかりがあり、かつタッチスクリーンとも親和性のあるインタフェース「SLAP」（Silicone iLluminated Active Peripherals）です。

シリコンゴムとアクリルで構成された透明の「SLAP」はボタン、ノブ、スライダー、キーボードの四種類があり、それぞれタッチスクリーン上に置くことで物理的に操作できるようになります。操作に応じてスクリーンの様子も動的に変化させることができますし、置き場所も自由......といった操作性は続きに掲載している動画を見れば一目瞭然。Optimusの出る幕がなくなってしまいます。

作りとしては「置かれた場所を認識する」＋「操作を認識する」というだけのシンプルなもので、タッチスクリーン側では先日ご紹介した「Struktable」と同様、FTIR（frustrated total internal reflection）を用いた認識をしています。原理としてはスクリーン上に置いた物体を認識できるマイクロソフト Surface と共通。ついにタンジブルの時代ですね。

■Bluetooth 3.0仕様まもなく公開、Alternate MAC/PHY採用

Bluetoothの規格策定団体 Bluetooth SIGが、バージョン3.0の仕様を4月21日に公開することを明らかにしました。Bluetooth v3.0は現行最新のv2.1に続く次世代規格。大きな違いはペアリングやプロファイルに従来とおなじBluetoothプロトコルを使用しつつ、必要に応じて下位レイヤーを別の通信方式に切り替える Alternate MAC / PHY機能を採用すること。

Alternate MAC / PHYにより、通常は消費電力の低い従来のBluetoothで機器間の連絡を取りつつ、大量のデータ通信が必要となったときはそのままシームレスに802.11 無線LANを使って転送するといったことが可能になります。もうひとつの新機能 Enhanced Power Control (EPC)は、Bluetooth SIGによればヘッドセットや携帯をポケットやかばんにいれるなど移動させたときに起こる切断を低減させるもの。Read先はPhonescoopの事前情報記事ですが、続きにBluetooth SIGの公式ステートメントを載せておきます。

■XCMから振動＆マクロ対応のPS3用スティック、変換アダプタ

掻いてよいのか分からないところにまで手が届くゲーム周辺機器のXCMから、プレイステーション3用のスティック新作 Rumble Joystick for PS3が発表されました。ランブルの名のとおり、スティックなのに振動機能に対応するところが特徴です。XCMいわく振動対応はPS3互換ジョイスティックとして世界初。

さらに20ステップまでのボタン・レバー操作の組み合わせを記録して1ボタンで呼び出すことができるマクロキー 4つ、ボタンごとに独立して高速・中速・オフが設定できる連射機能も搭載します。接続はUSB有線式、2台までの同時使用に対応。

XCMからはまた、デュアルショック3やSIXAXISあるいは有線 Xbox 360コントローラとPS3のあいだに挟んで連射とマクロ機能(20ストローク x 5個)を追加するアダプタ KO Adaptorも発表されています。スティック・アダプタともに今月中にも出荷される見込み。価格は今のところ不明。続きには振動抜き・装飾過剰なPS3スティック Dominatorを掲載。

■Inspiron Mini 10 店頭販売開始、デルオンラインは13日から

先月末の発表からやや間をおいて、デル Inspiron Mini 10の店頭販売が開始されました。Mini 10は1366 x 768の高解像度パネルや内蔵ワンセグ、GPS、WWANといった豊富なオプションが予告されていますが、店頭販売モデルは4万9800円・Officeつき5万9800円の単一構成で販売中。

店頭販売モデルの基本仕様は10.1型 1024 x 576 TrueLife WLED光沢液晶、Atom Z520 (1.33GHz)、1GBメモリ、160GB HDD、5 in 1 メモリカードスロット、802.11b/g WiFi、Bluetooth、USB 2.0 x3、HDMI出力、VGA出力、130万画素ウェブカメラなど。OSはWindows XP Home SP3。jp.dell.comでは13日月曜から受注を開始する予定です。

■Wii Sportsリゾートは6月発売、Wii MotionPlusアクセサリ同梱

昨年のE3で発表されたWiiリモコンの精度向上アクセサリWii MotionPlus、およびMotionPlusが同梱されるWiiスポーツ続編 Wii Sports Resortは2009年春に登場とされてきましたが、任天堂の岩田社長みずから国内では6月、海外では7月に発売される予定を明らかにしました。Wii MotionPlusはWiiリモコンの拡張ポートに取り付けるアクセサリ。

「プレイヤーの腕の姿勢をより包括的に検出し、プレイヤーに無比の正確さと没入感を提供」と説明されているように、これまでにない機能を付け加えるのではなく、高精度のセンサーを追加してより直感的な操作を可能にする製品です。対応タイトルはMotionPlusおよびジャケットを同梱するWii スポーツ・リゾートのほか、EAのGrandSlan TennisやTiger Woods 10など。

岩田社長と宮本茂専務の同席した外国特派員向けミーティングで語られたのはこのほか：


  • (月間販売台数でPS3にも後れをとった国内のWii本体販売について) 国内のWii本体はあまり元気がない。発売以来の不調。これを6月のWii Sportsリゾートなどで盛り返してゆく。

  • 本体の値下げは考えていない。もし任天堂の製品が他社とおなじようなものであったら、値下げにも意味があったかもしれないが、ゲームとはそうしたものではない。

  • DSiは北米・欧州でも好調。それぞれの市場で発売二日間で30万台を販売。

■薄さ0.2mmのフラットパネルスピーカー FFL

フラットパネルスピーカはもはや新しくもありませんが、英Warwick大学のスピンアウト企業 Warwick Audio Technologiesが発表した技術はひと味違います。 FFL (Flat Flexible Loudspeaker)と呼ばれるこの透明フィルム状スピーカは、厚さ0.2mm程度と大変薄いことが特徴。現状でA3?A5サイズでの動作が確認されているほか、この手のスピーカでは小さくなりがちな音量も80?105dBと実用範囲に収まっています。

構造はSTAXのコンデンサ型ヘッドホンなどで採用されているESLとおなじく、絶縁膜を2つの導体膜でサンドするだけというシンプルなもの。FFLでは片側の導体膜に多孔質膜を採用し、その穴のサイズを最適化することでドライブ電圧の低減などが図られました。 安価に作成することが可能になれば、天井や壁面にフィルムを貼付けた壁スピーカや街頭広告、車のダッシュボード周りなど種々の応用が期待されます。同社では製品を年内にも出荷する見込み。続きに構造図を掲載。

■ワイヤレスSDカードEye-Fi 4GB SDHC版 米国で出荷開始

4GB SDHC版 Eye-Fi の出荷が米国で始まりました。先月正式発表されたEye-Fi Explore Video はWi-Fiホットスポットへのアクセス権つき＆ 写真に位置情報を埋め込むジオタグに対応した従来モデルExploreに動画アップロード機能を追加、容量4GBのSDHCカードになったモデル。Share Videoは国内でも販売されている通常版の4GB SDHC & ビデオ対応モデル。価格はExplore Videoが$99、Shareが$79。オンライン予約分はすでに出荷が始まっており、Amazon.comでは13日、店頭では19日から販売される予定です。また4GB版の登場にともない、従来版のEye-Fi Shareは59ドル・店舗によっては50ドル前後に価格改定。国内のEye-Fiオンラインストアでは従来の2GB Shareを9980円で販売中です。

■金の延べマウス

ある男がFPSをプレイしていたところ、理不尽なラグのせいで殺されてしまいました。男が怒りに任せてマウスを放り投げると、なぜか窓が開いており、おまけにワイヤレスマウスだったので、向かいの公園の池まで飛んで行ってしまいました。慌てて拾いに向かうと、池から女神が現れてこう言いました。「あなたが落としたのはこの金のマウスですか？」男は答えて言いました。「いいえ、センサーの画像処理 13000フレーム / 秒、最大加速75G、最大速度120インチ / 秒、分解能4000dpiのゲーミングマウスです」。女神は微笑んで言いました。「正直者のあなたには、この金のマウスを差し上げましょう」

そういった逸話はとくにありませんが、写真はI Want One Of Thoseにて販売中の、自称「ハイテクワイヤレスマウス」。本物の金は一切使用されていません。左右のボタンと、ボタンにもなるスクロールホイールを搭載。その他の性能はPC / Macに対応という漠然とした記述のみで、dpiがどうこうといった情報は一切ありません。価格は24.99ポンド。マウス性能にこだわらない人へのプレゼントや、マウス性能にこだわる人への嫌がらせにどうぞ。ダイアモンド版もあります。

■時速270キロを目指す「やかん」号、蒸気車最速記録を100年ぶりの更新へ

見るからに速そうな写真の車は、それもそのはず六月早々には世界最速記録に挑む予定のものです。ただし挑むのは蒸気車の部。Daily Mail Onlineによると、現在の蒸気車の世界最速記録は127.659mph（およそ205km/h）で、Fred Marriottが記録を達成したのは1906年のこと。「世界最速のやかん」という身も蓋もない名前のついたこの細長い車は、イギリスでのテスト走行を終え、これから米国で新記録達成を狙う構えです。目標は170mph（およそ270km/h）とのことなので、100年以上その座を守った記録の大幅な更新が期待できます。

ちなみに車の長さは7.6m、重さは3トン。12のボイラーを内蔵し、1分間で50リットルの脱塩水を利用します。Read先では内部構造など、カッコイイけど乗りたくないと思わせる写真や図を多数掲載中。

■RFID認証・Twitter通知搭載の猫ドア Tweeting Cat Door

twitterのボット支配が進む昨今、とある猫好きエンジニアがtwitter通知付きの猫ドア開閉システム Tweeting Cat Doorを開発しました。このエンジニアが注目した解決すべき問題とは、「隣家の猫が猫用ドアから勝手に入ってきて、飼い猫のエサを食べてしまう」こと。またその理由を「うちのエサのほうが美味しいから」と邪推。問題を解決するため、飼い猫のエサをまずくするのではなく、2匹の飼い猫(GusとPenny)を認識し、飼い猫に対してのみ猫用ドアの開閉を行う装置の開発に着手しました。

開発者ブログにはTweeting Cat Doorの詳細が説明されています。まず2匹の猫の首輪にそれぞれ異なるIDを持つRFIDタグを組み込みます。そして、RFID内蔵首輪をつけた飼い猫が猫用ドアに近づくとIDのマッチングを行い、登録されたIDが一致した場合、サーボモータでドアを開閉させます。この時、どちらのネコが出入りしたかを写真とともにtwitterに投稿します。自分たちの預かり知らぬところで200人超のフォロワーに監視される2匹の猫は、今日も元気に出入りしているようです。

徳川家埋蔵金以上の規模で世界的に取り組まれている「iPhone 3.0ベータに含まれる様々なファイルから新機能を推測する調査」に、また進展がありました。まずは先日の記事でも痕跡のあった動画撮影機能について。MacRumorsによると、設定ファイルを変更すると従来のカメラに動画撮影に切り替えスイッチが表示されたとのこと。ただし、撮影にはまだ対応していませんでした。

設定ファイルにはさらに「オートフォーカスカメラ」「電磁探知機」（電子コンパス？」「音声ダイアル」といった言葉も並んでいたとのこと。同様にThe Boy Geniusも動画撮影、音声ダイアル機能を発見したと報じています。いずれも以前から期待されていた機能です。夢が形になりつつあるのか、高度な釣りなのか、夏には一度すべてが明らかになり、また4.0の推測作業が始まる予定です。

なんだかすごいことになっている写真の手術ロボットはIntuitive Surgical社の「Da Vinci」です。すべての症例を記憶したAIが四本の腕を駆使してどのような手術も完璧にこなす......というわけではなく、あくまで人間が操作するもの。カメラとロボットアームを備えた巨大な手術インタフェースだとお考え下さい。FDAにはじめて認可された手術用ロボットであり、日本でも九州大学などで導入されています。

今回発表になった「Da Vinci Si」は従来機のユーザインタフェースを改善し、トレーニングやコラボレーション用にコントローラ部分を二台繋げられるようになった新バージョン。二人操作の場合はインカムで会話することも可能です。16:9の3Dハイデフモニタ、タッチスクリーンなど、旬のキーワードがスペックに並んでいるのも面白いところ。

続きには操作の様子がよく分かる動画を掲載しています。「そういえば昔PCでこんなゲームあったなあ」と思った方、そこは歳がばれないよう「そういえば最近Wii / DSでこんなゲームがあったなあ」と思うべきでした。

スケボーには乗れないがホバーボードの夢は諦められない皆様、妥協点として写真の「Scarpar」はいかがでしょう。平たくいうとエンジン付きスケボーです。まだプロトタイプ段階ながら、多少の悪路でも砂の上でも雪の上でも猛然と走ります。4サイクルエンジンを搭載し、時速は30km、最大積載量は110kgの予定。来年の商品化に向けて開発中で、価格は$2000から$3000の計画です。

続きには、走行中の動画を掲載。うっかりバランスを崩したらどうなるのかは考えないことにして、これであれこれトリックを決めてやろうという輩が現れないかが心配です。

■Researchers develop laser-guided microhoverbot, Engadget coins new word

We could have sworn that one of our commenters had already invented this, but maybe not. Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario -- led by Professor Mir Behrad Khamesee -- has developed a microbot weighing in at about three-hundredths of an ounce that hovers and moves about on a three dimensional parabolic magnetic field. Altering the flow of the electromagnetic current distorts the field and propels the robot. Additionally, the device has pincers that open when heated by a laser, closing once they're allowed to cool. The device is monitored by laser sensors and by camera, and since the it floats free of any sort of wiring (and power is supplied from outside the robot) it is ideal for working in clean rooms or hazardous environments. Not too shabby, eh? At the very least, we got to use the word "microhoverbot."

Remember Intel's Anti-Theft Technology that debuted around this time last year? You know, that wicked cool invention that you've heard absolutely nothing about ever since? Evidently it's still alive and kickin', as ASUS has just announced that two of its lappies will come loaded with it. The P30 and P80 will both arrive with the so-called theft deterrent system, enabling owners to send a "poison pill" (it's words, not ours) remotely, rendering their computer inoperable by "comprehensively shutting it down." If you manage to reacquire it in one piece, a passphrase can be inputted in order to reactivate things. Still, we have to wonder how this will really detract thieves from snapping up unattended machines -- we mean, do they really stop to check out the anti-theft software before wheeling away with your rig? We're guessing not.

■HTC Fiesta is "an Android phone," so says Bluetooth SIG

We know from countless encounters with our dear, dear friends at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group that their certifications aren't as... shall we say, "detailed" as their counterparts at the FCC; frequently, we don't even bother with them because there's simply nothing there to talk about. Android phones are still pretty difficult to come by, though, so whenever we see the platform mentioned in a certification of any kind, we're bound to sit up and take notice -- particularly when said certification comes via HTC. Tipster Jeff came across a filing for an HTC "Fiesta" in the SIG this time around, descriptively noted as "an Android phone" that'll be available in Asia, Europe, and North America. Other than that, we can count on it having Bluetooth (would be funny if it didn't, wouldn't it?), but that's about it; the G1 / Dream was the Kila, the Magic was the Sapphire, so what's this gonna be?

■Dell Adamo torn to shreds for science and bragging rights

The fine folks at iFixit and TechRepublic have teamed up to show us the innards of Dell's new thin-and-sort-of-light ultraportable Adamo. They also set the laptop up against Apple's MacBook Air to compare build quality and specifics. For instance, the Adamo packs a 11.1 volt 40 Watt hour battery, compared to the Air's 7.2 volt 37 Watt hour battery, and comprises a greater percentage of the weight of the computer than its Air counterpart -- who knew? Overall the Adamo seems to pack a good amount more technology into a slightly heavier package, and takes a small win over the MacBook for nixing the screws on the bottom, not to mention the huge win over its Windows counterparts for skipping out on the Intel and Windows stickers.

■Steve Jobs still involved in 'key aspects' of running Apple, testing out that iTablet you so desire?

According to those ever-quotable "people familiar with the matter," Steve Jobs is still "closely involved" in "key aspects" of running Apple, reports the Wall Street Journal. While Tina Fey's favorite keynote-giver has remained incognito ever since he took a medical leave in January, the WSJ has learned that he's been working hard from home, involved in strategy and key products -- including some nitty gritty of the new interface elements in iPhone 3.0. The article also makes mention of a jumbo-sized iPod touch of sorts (an iTablet, if you will), but it's hard to tell if that word is from these same people familiar with the matter, or if the WSJ is just picking up that perennial rumor from less reputable sources. Apple's of course remaining tight-lipped, merely stating that "Steve continues to look forward to returning to Apple at the end of June." All we know is that we're looking forward to putting all this rampant speculation behind us, and an Apple-involved Steve seems like a great step in that direction.

■Archos 5 firmware adds GPS car holder support, new file browser

We tell ya, the Archos 5 is becoming more inviting by the week. Late last month we saw a much-wanted high-def video plug-in come to light, and now an even newer firmware is adding a few more fantastic amenities. For starters, the v1.6.53 software adds GPS car holder support -- something the Archos 605 acquired last April. Essentially, it enables the device to comprehend map and routing data piped in via the hardware mount, and we should point out that it arrives with TeleAtlas maps for eight regions of Europe, North America and Russia. Additionally, users will definitely spot an all new file browser with drag-and-drop and multi-selection functionality, not to mention the TV Snap-on app that enables the unit to store several different channel lists. ■Sony patents PSP-controlled spy car

Check it out, all you budding G. Gordon Liddys -- if the usual assortment of spy gadgets isn't doing the job, Sony's got something in the works that should be right up your alley. According to a little site called Siliconera, Sony's European arm has filed a patent for a remote-controlled car uses the PSP as an interface. This bad boy is equipped with a camera that feeds video back to the hand held and allows the user to upload the footage to a website. If that weren't all, the patent makes mention of an augmented reality racing game incorporating virtual markers and paths that the players physically create -- that is, the junk in your apartment is incorporated into on-screen game play. Innocent fun, right? Well, perhaps -- at least until Iran gets involved. They're still pretty bent by the whole squirrel thing.

■MSI's Wind U123 netbook gets unboxed

We already caught MSI's upgraded Wind U120 (which goes by U123, if you must know) sitting pretty at CeBIT last month, but the crazy cats over at PortableMonkey have gone and got a model fresh in the box. Needless to say, this retail edition (which is hitting Japanese shelves any moment now) didn't stay packaged up for long, but we are happy to say that we've been cordially invited to feast our eyes upon the unboxing process. Right out of the gate, we have to share the disappointment in the lack of a rear panel for easily accessing the internal RAM and HDD, but at least the Atom N280 is a (minor) step above what we've grown accustomed to. Years after the HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) suit first debuted, it seems that Cyberdyne's pride and joy is about to get really real. According to a report over at HPlus Magazine, the company is linking up with Daiwa House in order to "begin mass production" of the cybernetic bodysuit. You already know what it does -- inflates the ego, boosts your strength and scores you loads of nerd dates -- but here's the crucial part: $4,200. Of course, there's no hard date on when the first of the 400 annual units produced will be made available, but we'd probably get up with someone about a pre-order if you're serious about going bionic.

We've already seen Gigabyte's T1028 netbook / tablet up close, and even gotten a glimpse of the user manual, but the folks at UMPC Portal have now finally come though with a proper hands-on of the device, which looks to confirm that it does indeed deliver the goods, if not quite justify its $600+ price tag. What's more, as welcome as that swiveling touchscreen is, it looks like it's the little touches that really push this one over the edge, including an all too often omitted ExpressCard slot, built-in 3G, 802.11n WiFi, some actually accessible upgrade options, and an apparently faster than usual 2.5-inch hard drive. Okay Bandai, we get it. After over 50 years of making cheap toys and video games you want to show the world you can make overpriced stuff too. As if your $2,200 Ginza diorama wasn't enough of a statement, now you're producing a $525 box that lights up and blinks like a miniaturized monochrome disco floor. It's called Project A.i.R., or Art In the Room, and it's basically a 5 x 5 grid with blue LEDs covered by some sort of translucent fabric. Inside each square in the grid is a fan that makes the cloth billow, slightly increasing the brightness of that section of the grid. It's an interesting effect for sure, but as you can see in the video below its functionality is somewhat... limited. But is it art?

■75-megawatt solar plant to power "first solar city" in Florida

Given that Florida has accurately been coined The Sunshine State, it's not at all shocking to hear that America's first "solar city" will be built in the state's southwest corner. Or, at least that's the plan. According to a new report, West Palm Beach-based Kitson & Partners is currently developing a new city near Charlotte County, which will get juiced by a massive 75-megawatt solar plant. Said plant will cost around $300 million to build and will be installed by Florida Power & Light; if all goes well, homes will begin construction on a sizable plot of land dubbed Babcock Ranch by 2011. If things don't go so well, we're told that the actual power plant will still be erected and fed into the larger grid. In other words, Florida's gettin' some solar power, with or without this newfangled concrete jungle.

■BrewTroller simplifies homebrewing, makes it doable while inebriated

It's been a mystery for ages, but at long last, it seems a simple DIYer has found a solution. We all know that the best beers are the ones brewed at home, but after a given amount of "test sips," things can easily get a little out of control. In order to simplify the homebrewing process, the brilliant BrewTroller was concocted during a short stint with sobriety. In essence, the system utilizes a Sanguino microcontroller platform which was inspired by the tried-and-true Arduino in order to give brewers complete control over temperature and the like. When connected to a simple menu-driven display, it removes the need to bang out a paragraph of code while tipsy in order to tweak the flavor ever so slightly. 本日米国で開催されたAcerプレスイベントの目玉はこちら、13.3 〜 15.6インチの長時間駆動ノート Timelineシリーズ。CPUにULV のCore 2 Duo SU9400を採用しつつ、SSDモデルで10時間以上、HDDモデルで8時間以上の長時間駆動が特徴です。仕様はCineCrystal LEDバックライト1366x768ディスプレイ、Core 2 Duo ULV、DDR3メモリ、500GB HDDまたは64GB SSD、WiFi / WiMAXなど。

薄型・軽量もうたっており、厚さは28.7mmから29.7mm、重量は13.3インチモデルで約1.6kg、14.1インチで1.9kg、15.6インチモデルでは約2.4kg以下とそれなり。一方で価格はUS$699から$899と、他社の高級薄型ノートが動揺せざるを得ない競争力です。競合製品と比較したベンチマークや省電力・手に伝わる温度が5℃低いという低発熱をアピールするスライドは下のギャラリーへ。

こちらも(ほぼ)事前情報どおり、AcerがNVIDIA Ionプラットフォーム採用のネットトップAspireRevoを発表しました。仕様はAtom 230プロセッサ、〜4GB RAM、〜250GB HDD、4 in1 カードリーダ、ギガビットLAN、USB 2.0ポート x6、HDMI / VGA出力、7.1chオーディオなど。OSはWindows Vista Home Basic / Premium。写真のポート類との比較で分かるように、本体サイズは縦横 約18cmに厚さ約3cmと非常に小型です。

NVIDIA Ionの搭載により可能になるのは1080p HD動画再生、(外付けのドライブがあれば) BD再生、DirectX 10対応、たとえばCall of Duty 4やSpore, Sim City 5程度のゲームなど。さらにGPUパワーをグラフィック以外の処理に活かすCUDAにも対応します。「Hornet」のコードネームで呼ばれていた流出資料ではUS$149から$299までとされていましたが、公式には価格・発売時期ともに言及なし。おそらく今年Q2には登場しそうな雲行きです。続きはNVIDIA / Acerのプレスリリース。

米国で開催されたAcerのプレスイベントより。以前からうわさされていたAspire oneの11.6インチモデルが正式発表となりました。仕様は11.6インチLEDバックライトWXGAディスプレイ、Atom プロセッサ、160GB HDD、802.11b/g WiFi、Bluetooth、3G WWAN、ドルビープロロジック対応、マルチカードリーダーなど。先月のリーク情報とほぼ一致しています。厚さは約1インチ、6セル5200mAhの大バッテリーで約8時間駆動。つまりデル Inspiron Mini 12のAcer版といった位置づけになると考えられます。価格や各地域での投入時期などは未定。

■PSP2はスライドタッチスクリーンで年内登場、という説

開発は当然している(だろう)、PowerVR系の新グラフィックスコアを採用(かもしれない)、UMD廃止(もありうる)とさまざまな説が囁かれている次世代PSPにまたあらたなうわさが出てきました。英Pocket Gamerが「新PSPのハードウェア開発にかかわるインサイダー」なる人物から得たと主張するところによれば、新型PSPはスライド式のタッチスクリーンとゲーム用キー・ボタンを備え、現在のPSPよりもiPhoneに似たデバイスになるとのこと。

閉じた状態ではiPhone / iPod touch的な全面タッチスクリーン、開くとゲームコントローラボタンが現れるというのは、おなじみ「ぼくが考えた新PSP」(上画像)を読んで形容したかのような表現です。さらに「インサイダー」によれば、アナログ方向キーがついに2つになるという話もあります。

あまり新鮮味がないうえにソースがあやふやなうわさとして強いておもしろい点を挙げればUMDレスになること、および今年の「クリスマス前」発売とされていることなど。PSストアでの新旧作ダウンロードなどから将来的なUMDレス路線は理解できるとして、今年年末商戦にマイナーチェンジのPSP-4000ではなく新規格のPSP2発売はなかなか激しいお話です。従来のPSシリーズのように独自アーキテクチャの高機能チップを作っている場合ではない(らしい)ことを踏まえれば、どうやら携帯ゲーム市場を本気で脅かしそうなiPhone / iPod touchに追い上げられる前に、そして任天堂に絶妙なタイミングで介入されないことを狙った電撃作戦と解釈すべきかもしれません。

「WiiSpray」はスプレー缶に見立てたWiiリモコンでデジタルグラフィティを描くシステム。バウハウス大学の学生 Martin Lihs氏が修士論文プロジェクトとして開発しているもので、最新の2nd Editionはスプレー缶型アタッチメントもソフトウェアもさらにパワーアップしています 。とりあえずは続きの動画デモをどうぞ。

プレゼンのとおり、基本機能は本物のスプレー缶そのままのインターフェースでグラフィティが描けるほか、画面上で簡単に色を作成・キャップの切り替え、デジタルならではのundoや選択消去、写真のデジタル・ステンシル(型)など。さらに2nd Editionではネットワークを介したコラボや作品・データの共有といった機能も挙げられています。

WiiSprayを構成する材料はハードウェアがWiiリモコンに自作の缶アタッチメント、プロジェクタ、ソフトウェアがPC上で走るFlash ＋ WiiSprayサーバ。WiiリモコンとFlashのやりとりにはWiiFlash Server / APIを使っています。いまのところは学生のプロジェクトであるため、製品としての販売あるいはインラインスケートで当局から逃げ回りつつ町中を不適切なグラフィティで埋め尽くすゲームへの採用といった予定はなし。一般向けにはグラフィティが描けるほどの大画面を用意するのが課題となりそうですが、AR系のメガネ型ディスプレイと組みあわせれば見たい人にしか見えないグラフィティ、なにもない空中にタグといった遊び方もできそうです。

■SnapdragonベースのネットブックPurseBook

写真はCTIAのQualcommブースより、台湾Wistronが製造したSnapdragonベースのネットブック試作機「PurseBook」。1GHz駆動のARMv7互換プロセッサに600MHz駆動のDSP、各種メディアプロセッサやら周辺機器コントローラなどをまるっと1パッケージ化したSnapdragonはたとえば東芝のWindows MobileスマートフォンTG01に採用されていますが、もともとネットブックにも十分な性能を謳っていただけあり、ノート型の試作機もかなり以前から登場しています。

NVIDIAのTegraノート試作機がHP Mini 1000を流用していたのに対して、PurseBookはソニーのVAIO type P、あるいはレノボのPocket Yoga的な横長筐体。PurseBookという名称そのまま、巨大な札入れ的形状となっています。デモ機のOSはThunderSoft製のLinuxベース。Qualcommいわく、PurseBookのようなSnapdragonミニノートは299ドルから499ドル程度で2009年中にも出荷される見込み。とはいえ実際にどのメーカーから販売されるのか、OSがたとえばAndroidやUbuntuになるのかetcについて正式な発表はまだありません。続きはデモ動画。

■Androidベースの固定電話・タブレットPC、T-Mobileから登場？

Android携帯を他社に先駆けて投入したT-Mobileが、家庭用の固定電話機やタブレットにもAndroidプラットフォームの採用を計画しているようです。New York Times紙がT-Mobile関連会社から入手したという書類によると、来年早々にまず家庭用電話機が、そのあとすぐにタブレットPCが登場するとのこと。電話のほうはドックステーションに加え、充電とデータの同期を行うデバイスが用意される見込み。一方、タブレット型デバイスのほうは7インチのタッチスクリーンを備え、キーボードのない端末になるとされています。機能は天気予報の確認や、家庭用デバイスの管理など。携帯とおなじAndroidベースとして、Webブラウザやメッセージングアプリも当然予想されるところです。ただし、T-Mobileからは今のところコメントなし。

■動画：二人乗りセグウェイ風二輪車「P.U.M.A.」正式発表

昨日お伝えしたばかりの、セグウェイ−ゼネラルモーターズ共同開発による電動二輪車「P.U.M.A.」が正式に発表されました。良いニュースか悪いニュースかは分かりませんが、イベントで公開されたのは試作機で、動作はするものの製品版ではありませんでした。発売日や価格もまだ未定です。

乗り物としてはおおむねセグウェイに座席がついて二人乗りになったという認識で間違いなし。ただし二人で息を合わせて重心を傾ける必要はなく、左座席にハンドルがあります。お披露目されたモデルではセグウェイ同様に重心で加速・減速を行っていましたが、将来的には「任天堂風に」ハンドル裏にアクセル / ブレーキのボタンを用意する計画とのこと。同時押しでドリフトするかは言及されていません。

気になるというか、気にせざるをえない安全性については、事前情報のとおりコミュニケーション機能により他の車両と情報をやりとりすることで事故や渋滞を防ぐほか、歩行者を察知して減速・停止する機能、およびGPSの搭載でなんとかする模様。対車両ではなく対歩行者を念頭に置いた表現が気になりますが、それは今のところこの車両を自転車専用レーンで走らせる計画だからです。自転車専用レーンの発達したヨーロッパはともかく、日米など他の地域での扱いには深遠な考えがあるのか、セグウェイ同様に特になんの考えもないのか不安なところ。そもそも自転車専用レーンにこんなものが走っていいのかという気もします。

なお、約55km/hの最高速度、一度の充電で約55km走るというスペックは事前情報どおりでした。電動自動車としては貧弱ですが、漕げない電動自転車と考えればなんとかまあ納得感がないわけでもありません。格好良さそうだからとにかくオーケーという方は、これからGMが担当するデザインの変更が最小限に留まるよう祈る必要があります。秋にはテスト走行を行い、来年に製品版デザインが登場の予定。イベントの様子を集めたギャラリーには、早くも雲行きのあやしいデザイン案もあります。続きにはちゃんと動いている動画を掲載しています。

■アップル Time Capsuleに2TBモデル登場？

先月Airport ExtremeとともにアップデートされたばかりのTime Capsuleに、早くも2TBモデルの登場がうわさされています。発端はアップル系オンラインストアClub Macの広告写真 (現在は削除されている模様)。

パッケージ写真下部には確かに2TBと記載されており、本物であれば近日中の発売が予想されます。「買ったばっかり」な方には少々残念なうわさですが、複数のユーザ間でのストレージ共有やバックアップをしており500GBや1TBだと心細いという方には朗報です。購入予定の方は今後の動向に注意したほうがいいかもしれません。

■東芝REGZAに春モデル、LEDバックライト、高光沢パネル、Wスキャン倍速など

東芝REGZAの上位機種Zシリーズに春モデルが登場しました。基本となる「Z8000」は昨年秋に発表された「Z7000」の後継モデル。乱反射を押さえ明所コントラストを向上させる「フルHDクリアパネル」を搭載し、1秒に120枚の画像を表示する「倍速・モーションクリア」はバックライト制御と組み合わせて1秒240枚の「Wスキャン倍速」へと進化しました。フルHDに満たない画像をアップコンバートする「レゾリューションプラス」も、さらにノイズが少なくなり、DVDレコーダなどの他機器がすでにアップコンバート済のデジタル放送（1440x1080）やDVD映像（720x480）も含めてREGZA側で補正する「レゾリューションプラス2」へと進化。正常進化とも言えますし、次第にスペックおたく以外は理解できない境地に達しつつあるとも言えます。37型、42型、47型の3モデル構成で、4月25日から順次発売です。

「ZH8000」は「ZH7000」の次期モデル、あるいは「Z8000」に300GBのハードディスクが内蔵されたもの。こちらは47型と55型の2モデル構成で、5月上旬から順次発売です。

そして最上位の「ZX8000」は「Z8000」にLEDバックライトを搭載したもの。映像の明るい部分は高輝度に、暗い部分は低輝度に最適化することで、200万対1のダイナミックコントラストを実現しています。内蔵ハードディスクはなし。46型と55型の2モデルで、6月下旬から順次発売です。

なにがなにやら分からないという方には、300GBのハードディスク搭載をしたフルHD・省エネ・倍速スキャンの「H8000」シリーズも42型、37型、32型の3モデルが発表になっています。またシンプルモデルの「A8000」についても、2月に発表済みの19型に加え、26型と32型も発表。価格はいずれもオープンプライスです。

■線路上をレール一本で走る小型車両 RailPod

The RailPod is one track short of a train car, the future of transportation?


利用の少ない線路を別の乗り物が走って活用するというアイデアは、日本においても道路と線路の両方を走るDMV（デュアル・モード・ビークル）で知られています。それに対して米マサチューセッツのRailPod社が考案したのが、写真の小型電気車両RailPod。運転手不要の二人乗りで、中にあるタッチパネルで指定した目的地まで既存の線路上を走ります。速度はおよそ50km/hになる模様。このサイズで二人乗り？　と思った方はご明察。写真では分かりづらいですが、幅が一人分しかありません。そのかわり、走る線路もレール一本分だけ。単線でもRailPod同士すれ違えるというのが最大のメリットです。

実物が一切ないのでスペックはまだ妄想と区別がつかない状態ですが、安全のためにカメラを搭載し、乗客が利用できるWiFi環境も搭載するとのこと。積荷の移動にも使えるとありますが、カメラが搭載されている程度で列車強盗の襲撃予防になるのでしょうか。他にも、利用の少ない路線区間に車両を走らせるそもそもの意義、モノレールとしての安定性など、つっこみどころは多数ありますが、二人きりの空間をゆっくり楽しめる列車と考えれば悪くないかもしれません。

CeBIT 2009で展示されていた Gigabyte T1028の製品ページおよびユーザマニュアルが公開されました。T1028　はタッチスクリーンディスプレイを備えたいわゆるコンバーチブルタブレット型のネットブック。英語版ページ、本国台湾向けページともに更新されています。

英語版製品ページにある基本仕様は10.1インチ 1024 x 600 LEDバックライト搭載タッチスクリーン、1.6GHz Atom N270、2.5インチHDD(160GB)、1GB SO-DIMMメモリ(最大2GB)、92%フルサイズキーボード、802.11b/g/n無線LAN、HSDPAモジュール内蔵、Bluetooth 2.1、1.3 メガピクセルカメラなど。バッテリは4セルと6セルの2種類。4セルバッテリ搭載モデルのサイズは265(W) x 195(D) x 38.5(H)mm、重量1.3kg。6セルバッテリ搭載モデルは、265(W) x 214(D) x 41.4(H)mm、1.48kg。

オプションで、1.66GHz Atom N280、WiMaxモジュールが選択可能です。英語版マニュアルP21によれば、10.1インチ 1,366 x 768のオプションもあるようです。現在のところ、価格、発売日は未定(coming soon/熱賣中との表記のみ)。

■GMとセグウェイが共同開発した恐怖の二輪車「P.U.M.A.」

写真の乗り物は個人制作ではありません。ゼネラルモーターズとセグウェイが共同開発中の電動二輪車、P.U.M.A.（The Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project）です。破産申請を検討中の自動車メーカーと発明者も行く末を思い悩むベンチャーがじっくり作った結果がこれだよ！　と思わず声を荒げたくなるデザイン。しかも写真では分かりづらいのですが、なんと二人乗りです。キャッチコピーは「ドアなし。問題なし。」でしょうか。

今すぐにでも輸入して道路交通法違反で逮捕されたいという方のためにスペックを紹介すると、最高速度は約55km/hで、一度の充電で約55km走ります。また、車両同士で連絡をとりあうことで事故や渋滞を防ぐ機能が搭載されているとのこと。それより先にやるべきことがあるだろうと思ってしまうのは頭が古いからでしょうか。価格や発売日、そもそも発売するのかといった情報は不明ですが、明日開催されるというイベントで詳細は明らかになるかもしれません。

■ニコン、デジタル一眼レフの新機種を14日に発表か

ニコンがデジタル一眼レフカメラの新機種を間もなく発表するようです。いくつかのブログで出回っているプレス向け招待状によると、同社はオーストリアで来週14日に新機種発表イベントを行う模様。おそらくD60の後継となるエントリー機、あるいは1600万画素で動画撮影に対応したミドルレンジのD400、もしくはハイエンドのD500かなにかでは、といった田宮榮一風プロファイリングが各所で行われています。

さらに裏付け情報として、クロアチアのドブロヴニクで新機種のコマーシャル撮影を行っている様子とされる写真も入っています。型番はわざとではと思うほど読めませんが、背面ディスプレイがマルチアングルになっており、小型です。なんだかリークもスパイ大作戦並になってきました。

auが新ブランド「iida」を発表しました。従来のau design project を継承、発展させたブランドであるiidaからは、今後年間を通してデザイン端末の販売がおこなわれる予定です。

iidaブランドの第一弾はソニーエリクソン製端末のG9(写真)、misora、草間彌生氏によるデザイン端末(3種)など計5機種。G9はボディ外周部にステンレスを採用した高級感のあるデザイン、misoraは丸みを帯びたフォルムのシンプルな端末、水玉で有名な前衛芸術家、草間彌生氏によるデザイン端末はケースや装飾を含めたアート作品として3バリエーションをリリース予定。 スペック詳細はiidaオフィシャルサイトにてどうぞ。

■Sling's $50 rebate on iPhone-compatible boxes rendered useless by stupid pricing

Think Sling Media is partially making up for its ridiculous arbitrary lockout of iPhones on older Slingboxes by offering a $50 credit toward the purchase of a new model? Think again: turns out that the credit is applied against prices in Sling's own online store, which are already jacked beyond reason. Actually, they aren't, they're just MSRP -- but let's be honest, no one pays MSRP for anything anymore, and you can get either the SOLO or the PRO-HD for less from Amazon than from Sling's store after the frickin' credit. It's a pretty backhanded way to say "thanks" to your early adopters -- and it's just a shame that the iPhone version of the SlingPlayer will likely be a strong enough draw to let the company get away with murder.

■RIM (employee): Storm 2 with "new approach to text entry" for end 2009, early 2010

Reputable Dutch site Tweakers has Alain Segond von Banchet, RIM channel sales manager according to LinkedIn, stating that the BlackBerry Storm followup is scheduled to launch at the end of the year or at the beginning of next. In addition, he has the phone coming to KPN, not Vodafone who had the first generation Storm locked-up under an exclusive deal. Interestingly enough, Mr. Segond von Banchet says that the Storm 2 (not the final name) will "offer among other things a new manner to input text" -- among other things meaning WiFi, presumably, as we heard before. Keep in mind that channel sales managers do not typically represent a company to the press. Nevertheless, what he's saying does jibe with previous rumors and we have no doubt that RIM is working hard to avoid the universal disdain that greeted the Storm's mushy, push-button touchscreen input.

Update: Tweakers responded telling us that Mr. Segond von Banchet was speaking on the record for RIM because there was no one from marketing at the TeleVisie 2009 Expo yesterday.

■Nintendo DSi torn asunder, sized up against DS Lite's innards

Sure, we saw the Nintendo DSi get its teardown treatment back in November, but now that it's available stateside, iFixit's decided to go for round two and rip the portable completely apart, snapping pics at each painful step. Taking it a step further, we also get to see in finer detail some of the differences between the new hardware and its DS Lite predecessor, including the now smaller 840mAh battery that we hear's been contributing to some shorter play sessions. ■HP Pavilion dv2 review roundup

We figure the design just to the left of the touchpad is more than enough to convince you to impulse-buy the $750 HP Pavilion dv2, but just in case you hesitated, the reviews are in and it's not all sunshine for the AMD Neo-powered non-netbook. Laptop Magazine notes it handles HD video pretty well, but it suffers from a cramped keyboard, above average heat, and a less than stellar battery life. Instead, they suggest a Samsung NC20 as a ligher, cheaper alternative. CNET said it got beat performance-wise by Intel Core 2 Duo laptops of comparable price range, and although it bested Atom in most tests, the two processors tied when multitasking. As for PC World, like Laptop, they did give kudos for better graphics performance, but added the caveat that the NC20 and upcoming MSI X-Slim X320 would give it a run for its money. ■Video: Bumptop gives Windows 7 touchscreen PCs purpose

Bumptop has been around as a video concept for a few years. Now this amazing desktop organizer with a physics engine underpinning the UI is available for download (PC only). The software allows you to bump and toss weighted objects across the desktop and organize them into folders or piles the way you would on your real-world desk. It also includes the ability to pan and zoom on images with all the gesture support you'd expect. While a touchscreen (multi-touch supported when Windows 7 ships) display provides a more natural interface, Bumptop also works with a mouse. Check the video after the break -- then hit up the download link below which we suspect you'll be frantically searching for after the video ends. Granted, we we don't want to spend our days with arms outstretched at "work" in front of a touchsceen PC anymore than you, but software like this could be useful on our lesser used, kitchen PCs.

Update: Katherine Boehret and Walt Mossberg have posted their review after playing with the wares for a few days. It's definitely "worth a try" but requires a shift from an application- to a desktop-driven approach to daily computing. Something they don't sound eager to do regardless of how "fun" Bumptop is.

With little to no fanfare, ViewSonic has followed up its recently outed VT2230 with an all-too-similar VG2427. Said display packs a 24-inch panel, 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 300 nits of brightness, a height adjustable stand and hidden stereo speakers. Additionally, you'll find a 2-port USB hub, ECO mode for sucking down less energy (while idle, we presume) and a seductively slim bezel to boot. It's up for grabs right now for $499.

■Intel debuts 2GHz Atom Z550 processor, demos Moorestown platform

In celebration of the Atom's one-year anniversary, Intel's unveiled Z550, the latest processor in the family and as the rumors suggested, it clocks in at a pretty impressive 2GHz along with support for Hyperthreading, all in under three watts of power usage. Additionally, it took the veil off of the Z515 with Intel Burst Performance Technology, which can bump the speed up to 1.2GHz. In more forward-thinking news, senior VP and general manager Anand Chandrasekher demoed its Moorestown MID platform on stage at a presentation, which we last heard was supposed to show itself in a more tangible form sometime this month via an Archos netbook. We've contacted Intel for video of that demonstration, so you're just gonna have to wait a bit for that.

■HTC Snap coming to T-Mobile sans Inner Circle?

So the juicy part of this rumor has to be the fact that T-Mobile could get a branded version of the lovely HTC Snap (or rather the US-specific S522, which doesn't carry the Snap name), a belief based on a leaked ROM rife with references to the carrier's name and logo. Of course, seeing how T-Mobile was HTC's partner on the Excalibur / Dash, it makes a lot of sense that they'd want to carry on the portrait QWERTY tradition there with an updated model, which is precisely where the S522 fits into the puzzle. This is where it gets weird, though: the ROM apparently has wiped all references to Inner Circle, HTC's software tweak that lets you selectively filter out emails from anyone not on your whitelist. Why they'd want to get rid of it is unclear since it wouldn't seem to affect carrier revenue in any way, so we're holding out hope that it'll reappear by the time the device ships -- if this rumor even ends up checking out, that is.

■Plethora of new Acer Aspires, eMachines, Gateway laptops and netbooks unveiled in one fell swoop

In addition to Timeline and the 11.6-inch Aspire One, Acer decided today to announce new laptops much in the way Nikon and other camera makers roll out their PMA lineup -- in groups of eight or more. By our count, we've got at least ten different models here.


  • Aspire 5935 and 8935: The 18.4-inch 8935 laptop can output a 1080p resolution, True 5.1 channel surround sound and houses up to two HDDs totaling 1TB capacity. The 5935 meanwhile can hold just one 500GB HDD and doesn't do full HD. Both support up to 4GB DDR3 memory, biometric fingerprinting, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and optional WiMAX.

Available with Intel Celeron or Pentium processors for all models, plus option for AMD Athlon with E and G series. 14-inch D and 17-inch G have up to 4GB DDR2 RAM, 500GB HDD, while the 15.6-inch E series can feature up to 5GB.   • Gateway 10.1-inch LT20, 11.6-inch LT30: Both are under 2.62 pounds, boast built-in WiFi, Webcam, optional Bluetooth and 3G modules, 5-in-1 card reader, and up to 160GB HDD. The touch pad supports multi-gesture features and reportedly it comes with a "cool protective bag" -- yay?

  • Gateway ID series: Available in glossy midnight blue or night sky with a matte interior and silver-colored touchpad. It's got an 15.6-inch LED backlit screen, slot-in DVD drive, webcam with a curtain (for privacy, obviously), mult-gesture touchpad, and capacitive hotkeys on top of the keyboard.


There's still got plenty of missing pieces here, such as pricing and availability for anything here, but one thing's for sure: we are thoroughly overwhelmed by the sheer number of new offerings.

■Acer's 11.6-inch Aspire One goes legit

After a little bit of suspense-free rumoring, the 11.6-inch Acer Aspire One is now official -- and pretty lovable. It's an inch thick, boasts a LED backlit screen with WXGA resolution, and runs the usual netbook internals like an Intel Atom processor, 160GB HDD and 802.11 b/g WiFi. On top of that there's Bluetooth, 3G, Dolby Pro Logic Sound and a multicard reader. It's also got a 8-hour lifespan with a 6 cell 5200mAh battery. Build quality is top-notch for its class, and we'd say Acer's doing good by the Aspire One name -- though they're messing with any sort of tight definition of "netbook" in the process. No word yet on price or availability.

■dmedia renames G400 MID, hopes to showcase M0 at Computex

While dmedia has definitely shown signs of life here lately, we've been decidedly left in the lurch with regard to its elusive MID. Initially spotted last November as the WiMAX-packin' G400, said unit skipped out on promised booth appearances at both CES and Mobile World Congress 2009. Being that we're the forgiving bunch, we're still maintaining some level of hope that the recently renamed M0 will indeed make itself seen at Computex this June. Outside of the identity swap, most everything else looks the same; specifications include a 4.3-inch touchscreen (800 x 480 resolution), a 5 megapixel webcam, a Fujitsu-sourced WiMAX module, built-in GPS module and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Details beyond that are few and far betwixt, but hopefully we'll know more as warmer months approach.

■Acer Timeline hands-on

We just got all friendly with Acer's new Timeline lineup, and while we couldn't technically grasp at the hours upon hours of battery life they're promising, we could definitely feel the palpable presence of longevity. The laptops are very much an interesting blance; they're thin, but not astonishingly thin, they're heavy for their looks (especially the 15.3-inch), and they're styled aggressively in some ways while incredibly conservatively in others. We're not sure we're sold on the funky trackpad setup -- the right and left buttons aren't articulated, are sunken below the level of the touchpad, and are rather hard to touch -- but we like that Acer is really embracing multitouch here. The chiclet keys have a lot of great travel to them, but the board overall felt a little cheap and "prototype-ey" -- it may very well be a prototype.

■ThinkGeek のエイプリルフール「トーントーン寝袋」、製品化へ

ギーク御用達通販サイト ThinkGeek では毎年4月1日になるとエイプリルフール用の嘘グッズが発表されますが、あまりの出来の良さに実現化の要望が集まり、本当に発売まで漕ぎつけてしまうという現象をここ何年も繰り返しており (例: 8bit, 1up)、もはや新商品開発のためのリサーチとしか思えなくなっています。今年のラインナップからも「トーントーン寝袋」に要望が殺到、実現に向けて動き出しました。

「トーントーン」とはスターウォーズ・エピソード5に登場する二足歩行の乗用動物で、凍死寸前のルークが一夜をその腹の中で過ごしたことで有名。寝袋の裏地はトーントーンの内臓を模しており、ファスナーのチャームにはライトセーバーをあしらったゴージャスな逸品です。ルーカスフィルムの許諾が得られるのかどうかもまだわからない状況ですが、リンク先でメールアドレスを登録しておけば実現の暁には ThinkGeek から連絡がもらえます。

■インテル、MoblinプロジェクトをLinux Foundationへ移管

Alpha version of Intel's Moblin OS released for brave netbookers


Moblinといえばネットブックや組み込みシステム、そしてインテル語でいうMIDを対象にしたLinuxベースの複合プロジェクトで、1月には軽量・高速オープンソースOSのアルファ版が公開されたところです。そのMoblinプロジェクトがこれまでのインテル主導をあらため、今後はThe Linux Foundationによって管理されることになりました。

Read先のNew York Times記事にもあるとおり、Moblinはインテルの中でも重要プロジェクトと見なされAlan Coxのような有名開発者も採用したわりに、オープンソース業界ではAndroidやUbuntuなど他分野のプロジェクトに注目を奪われていました。今後はLinux Foundationの下で幅広く開発者を集めていくことになります。ただしインテルも手を引くわけではなく、同社の開発担当者を含めて引き続き関わっていく予定。Linux FoundationのJim Zemlin氏も「色々な人達が集まることで、活発になるはずだ」とコメントしています。ついでに寂しい日本語サイトも改善して欲しいものです。

■PCでWindows Mobileを操作できる REDFLYソフトウェア版

Windows Mobile機の外付けディスプレイ兼キーボードとして機能する小型ノート風デバイス「REDFLY」にソフトウェア版が加わりました。デバイス版のメーカーCelioが公開している「REDFLY Mobile Viewer」は、USB接続したWindows Mobile機の画面を手持ちのPCに表示するソフトウェア。たとえばQVGA解像度のスマートフォンでも高解像度デバイスのように表示され、ノート側のキーボードで操作可能。デバイス版同様に逆リモート・デスクトップとでもいうべき不思議な体験ができます。

そもそもREDFLYは当初$499という価格もあって、その値段ならネットブックが買える、そもそも高解像度にしてノートパソコン風キーボードを利用するだけのためにガジェットを持ち運ぶのは面倒、といった明らかな微妙ポイントがありました。実際、発売後すぐに価格は暴落、ほどなく安価モデルが登場と大混乱。手持ちのPCで同じことができるなら、はじめからこれで良かったのではと思わないでもありません。

スペックに話を移すと、PC側はWindows XP / Vista、モバイル側はWindows Mobile 5.0 / 6.0 / 6.1に対応しており、表示する解像度は800x480 / 800x600 / 1024x600 / 1024x768のいずれか。REDFLY同様に接続したままメールやSMSの送受信も可能です。ただしモバイル側は専用ドライバが必要になため、国内のWindows Mobile機では少なくとも公式には使えません(日本語表示もできます)。現在はパブリック・ベータがフリーで公開中。どういう収益構造を目指しているのかは不明ですが、単に有料ソフトウェアとして販売するのか、もしかしたらソフトウェア版に感銘を受けた人が今からでもハードウェア版を購入することを期待しているのかもしれません。

■ビョークも愛用のテーブルトップ電子楽器 reactable、製品化へ

ビョークが使っていることでもおなじみの電子楽器 reactableの開発者が、同システムの事業化のための会社を設立しました。社名はそのままreactable System。同社ウェブサイトによれば、reactableをはじめ「直感的に」操作できクリエイティビティを促進するさまざまな製品を開発する予定とのこと。

写真のreactableは、テーブル上のオブジェクトを回転／移動させることで自由に楽曲を作れるシンセサイザーです。ループ音源、オシレータ、フィルタなどさまざまな機能を持ったオブジェクトが存在し、オブジェクト同士を近づけることで音源をミックスしたり、エフェクトを追加することができます。実際に使用した感じだと確かに操作は直感的ではあるのですが、それなりの知識がなければ音は作れても音楽は作れないかもしれません。続きにMusikmesse Frankfurt 2009で撮影されたデモ映像とビョークのライブ映像を掲載しています。

オブジェクトのID、位置、傾きなどの情報は、蓮根にしか見えない マーカとreacTIVisionと呼ばれるオリジナル画像処理ソフト経由で取得されています。reactableプロジェクトのウェブサイトでは、C++, Java, C#, Processing, FlashをはじめとするライブラリをGPLライセンスで提供中。どなたか斬新なアイディアをお持ちのかたは、自前で実装してみるとreactable Systemから発売が決定する可能性もなきにしもあらずです。製品版 reactableの価格・発売時期はいまのところ未定。

■動画：Palm Preで動くPalm OSエミュレータ

Palm Preで動くPalm OS (Garnet) エミュレータについては先日お伝えしたばかりですが、開催中のCTIAでPhone Scoopが早くも動作を確認しています。新OSの中にアプリケーションとして旧OSがあるかたちで、バーチャルキーも本体キーボードをちゃんと対応して動いています。解説によると旧アプリのインストールはPreにprcファイルを送るだけ、旧アプリはSDカードからの起動も可能と、なかなかシームレスな設計になっている模様。HotSyncこそないものの、なんらかのデータ互換モードは用意されるそうです。

動画は続きに掲載しています。動画では、医療など旧OSが普及済みの分野でもこれで安心、という話になっていますが、Palm用Agendusじゃなきゃ駄目なんだ！　という方も救われるはずです。

■Xbox 360にシステムアップデート、バグフィックスのみ

Xbox 360にしばらくぶりのシステムアップデートが実施されています。今回は問題の修正のみ、新機能・サービスの追加なし。Major Nelsonによれば、修正されたのは「限られた数のXbox 360ゲームにおいて、一部のXbox LIVEユーザーがで影響を受けていたインタラプションの問題」。具体的にどのタイトルなのかはよく分かりませんが、アップデートを適用したことで不具合が起きたという報告はいまのところないようです。 アバターのビジネススーツ画像は記事内容と無関係。

なんでもGPS企業のGarminから、GPS腕時計の新機種 2モデルが発表されました。ひとつめは写真のForerunner 310XT。特徴は50mまでの防水設計、20時間の長時間バッテリー、「快適な」デザイン。歩行距離や速度を記録できるほか、別売の心拍計や歩数計ともワイヤレスで同期します。また心拍計も防水設計になったため、泳ぎながら心拍数の記録ができるようになりました。集めたデータは付属のANT+ USBスティックを接続したPCへワイヤレス送信可能。対応OSはWindows 2000以降 / Intel Mac OS 10.4以降です。発売は今夏予定、オンラインストア価格は$349.99。

もうひとつのForerunner 405CXは、歩行距離、速度のほかにカロリー計算もできるというもの。既発製品の405とほぼ同じスペックですが、カロリー計算精度が向上しています。もちろん、こちらも心拍計や歩数計と同期し、PCとワイヤレス接続が可能です。デザインについては言及がないものの、310XTに比べるとむしろマトモ。ただし防水設計はIPX7準拠どまりです。写真は続きに掲載しています。発売はやはり今夏の予定で、オンラインストア価格は$369.99。温度計や高度計を備えた他機種に負けないよう、円高レートで日本にも登場して欲しいところです。

■AirMac Extremeはいつから「5x Faster」?

先日発売された新 AirMac Extreme (MB763J/A) には、802.11n・デュアルチャンネル対応で11gの5倍速いことを示す「5x Faster」の表記がなされています。賢明なAppleウォッチャーの方はお気づきかもしれませんが、前バージョンのAirMac Extereme（MB053J/A）も発売当初は同様に5x Fasterの表記がありました。しかし、いつのまにか5x Fasterのマークは削除され、「11gの2.5倍の通信速度を実現」へと修正されていました。転送速度を売りにするルータ製品で規格上の最高速度をこっそり半分に減らしていたことになります。

■動画：iPhoneで遠隔操作できる改造RX-8、WiFi / RFIDリーダも搭載

車になんでも詰め込もうとする症例は海外を中心に、MTVの人気番組Pimp My Rideでも多数確認されています。今回、Geek My Rideなるウェブサイトで公開されたのが写真のマツダRX-8、オーストラリアに住むJonathan Oxerさんの作品です。手元のiPod Touchに車の様子が映っていますが、このままiPod Touch上でエンジンの回転数や車の速度が確認でき、さらにドアの開け閉めやエンジンのオンオフ操作まで可能になっています。

なぜそのようなバットマンまがいのことが可能になるのかというと、車の内部にLinux（Ubuntu）で動作する省電力アプライアンスAlix-1を搭載し、エンジンの故障診断に用いるダイアグインタフェースに繋げているから。エンジンのオンオフなどイグニッションの操作はAlix-1に接続された手製のArduinoボードで行います。加えてAlix-1を3Gのモバイルブロードバンドにも対応させたため、PCでもiPod TouchでもiPhoneでも、インターネット経由で車を遠隔操作することが可能。GPSが搭載されているので車の位置をGoogle Mapで遠隔から確認することができますし、WiFiアクセスポイントとしても機能するためウォードライビングの反対で行く先々にネット環境を提供します。

おまけにRFIDリーダも搭載しているので、あらかじめ登録しておいたRFIDを検知すると自動的にドアを開けてエンジンを作動させるとのこと。でも、きっとバッテリーには苦労するんでしょう？　とお考えの皆様、車は専用のインテリジェント・バッテリーを備えているため、運転時に自動充電します。もう何も言うことのない完成度です。続きに動画を掲載しています。

■NVIDIA、Tegraベースのミニノート試作機を披露

ラスベガスで開催中のCTIAより。NVIDIAブースで展示されていたのはHP Mini 1000そのものの外見でありつつ、「HP」ではなく緑のNVIDIAロゴが付いた怪しいミニノート。本物のMini 1000はインテルAtomを採用した一般的なネットブックですが、写真のノートはMini 1000をベースとしつつ、CPUやメモリを基板ごと引っこ抜いてNVIDIAの「コンピュータ・オン・チップ」ことTegraベースに改装した試作機です。

TegraはARM系 CPUコアに超低消費電力のGeForce GPUコア、メモリ・周辺機器コントローラなどをワンチップ化した組み込み向け高性能SoC。NVIDIAはすでに手のひらサイズの試作機で720p / 30fps 3Dゲーム(QUAKE III)やHDMI出力でHD動画再生といったデモを公開してきましたが、今回はミニノート型の筐体に収めて実際に動作しているところを披露することで、従来からの「HDゲーム・HD動画再生対応で長時間駆動、お値段 99ドル」MIDが不可能ではないと示す目的とのこと。OSにはWindows CEが使われています。

つまりあくまで実験的な試作機であって、HPから非インテル・非x86ノートを受注したわけではありません。ただNVIDIAはTegra上でAndroidを動かすデモも公開しており、Android x Tegraのノート的端末がどこかから登場することは十分考えられます。実際のデモの様子は続きに掲載。下のギャラリーにはノート型に収めた試作機のほか、一見メモリモジュールのような小型基板にTegraプラットフォームを収めたシングルボードTegra コンピュータの写真もあり。

■Atom/CULV採用のMSI X-Slimノート2モデル、Wind U123の詳細判明

ラスベガスのCTIAにて、薄型ノートX-Slimの詳細仕様が公開されました。最薄部6mmというX-SlimシリーズはMSIのMacBook Air対抗、あるいはネットブックの次に来つつある「安くて薄い」ノートカテゴリに属する製品。13.4インチでAtom ZxxプロセッサのX320、およびインテルの「CULV」クラスプロセッサを載せたX340が登場することはすでにCESや台湾でのイベントで明らかになっていましたが、今回は各機種のスペックシートと価格帯が正式に発表されています。

X320 / X340共通の仕様は13.4インチ1366 x 768光沢ディスプレイ、1.3Mピクセルウェブカメラ、USB 2.0 x 3ポート、Bluetooth v2.0+EDR、SD/MMCスロット、本体の厚さ約6 〜 18mm、4セルバッテリーで約1.27kgなど。

安いほうのX320はAtom Z530 (1.6GHz)、US15W(GMA500)、最大2GB RAM、250GB 2.5インチSATA HDD、VGA出力、10/100Mb LAN、802.11b/g/n WiFi。高いほうのX340ではCore 2 Solo SU3500 (3M L2キャッシュ、1.4GHz, FSB 800MHz)、チップセットにはGS45 + ICH9M-SFF (グラフィックはGMA4500MHD)、最大4GBメモリ、350GB 2.5インチSATA HDDなど。基本仕様ほかX320より優れているのはHDMI出力や ギガビットイーサネット端子を搭載すること。ただし逆にX320にはオプションの内蔵3G / WiMAXが記されているものの、X340は802.11b/g/nのみとなっています。

米国価格はX320が$700から、X340は$1000程度。米国での発売は5月となっています。続きはMSIのCTIAプレスリリース本文、および仕様表。またMSI Windの新機種 U123の仕様も公開されています。こちらは既報どおりAtom N280 + 945GSE (GMA950)、1GBメモリ、10.1インチ1024 x 600ディスプレイのネットブック仕様です。

■iPhone OS 3.0ベータ2に対応した脱獄ツールQuickPwn 3.0β

iPhone / iPod touchのお手軽JailbreakツールQuickPWNに、iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2に対応する非公式リリース3.0βが登場しました。開発者に提供されている最新版 iPhone OS 3.0β2にアップグレードしつつ、Jailbreak環境を維持したい場合向け。OSはWindows、ハードウェアはiPhone (2G), iPhone 3G, 初代 iPod touchに対応します。「非公式」はハッカーチーム Dev-teamの公式リリースではないという意味。3.0の脱獄自体はリリース直後から可能でしたが、dev teamとしてはいつもと同様、ベースバンドの不可逆な変更があるかもしれないからアンロックしている / したい人はしばらく待て、という見解です。

■ソニー、世界最小・最軽量フルHDハンディカムHDR-TG5Vを発表

ソニーから新しい縦型ハンディカム「HDR-TG5V」が発表になりました。現行HDR-TG1のモデルチェンジで、やや小さく軽くなったため今回も世界最小・最軽量（※1080i方式民生用AVCHDビデオカメラとして、2009年4月広報発表時点）。長い但し書きと前後してしまいましたが、前機種同様に1920x1080iのハイビジョン撮影に対応し、内蔵メモリは16GBと倍増しています。また新機軸としてGPS機能を搭載。撮影した動画 / 静止画に位置情報を加えられるほか、もちろん現在位置の確認もできます。撮影動画から自動的に抽出するハイライト再生機能や、デジタルカメラでお馴染みのスマイルシャッター機能も加わりました。

その他のスペックはおおむねTG-1を引き継ぎ、264万画素の1/5型"Exmor" CMOSセンサー、35mm換算で43mmからの光学10倍ズーム、2.7型のタッチパネル液晶、メモリースティックDuoスロットなど。HDMI端子は本体から付属の"ハンディカム"ステーションに移動しています。発売は今月20日の予定。価格はオープンプライス、市場推定価格は120000円前後です。

なお、オプションとして広角が30mm相当になるワイドコンバージョンレンズ「VCL-HGE07TB」も発表になっています。こちらも本体と同じ今月20日の発売予定、価格は12600円。

■Giant Lego DSi combines grand traditions of enshrining Nintendo products, photographing your diabolical cats

Built from 51,324 Lego pieces and the souls of several misbehaved kittens, this gargantuan DSi currently adorns a window of the Nintendo World Store in NY. While this is spectacular in itself, we're even more impressed with the mirror images of "NAILS, HAIR, PSYCHIC" hovering menacingly over the scene, speaking of the powers and inherent evil of the cat captured by the DSi's camera. While there are plenty of Lego / Nintendo mashups out there, we'd say this one definitely wins the price for malevolence.

■Japan sending biped robots to conquer moon by 2020

Remember back in 2006 when we told you about Japan's goal to colonize the moon with robots? Some dreams don't seem to die, and the country's Strategic Headquarters for Space Development said recently that they expect a two-legged droid traversing the satellite's surface by 2020. Should that prove successful, it'll be followed later by a joint mission with humans -- that is, if the robots don't find a way to take over before then and deny the spacemen their planetary visas.

■How would you change Dell's Inspiron Mini 10?

After a rocky, if not comical launch, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 is now shuffling out in full force to legions of soon-to-be netbook owners. For those of you who already bought in -- via QVC or the more traditional street corner vendor model -- we're wondering what you'd do differently if magically given a mythical Do Over token. Would you simply offer up the options (TV tuner, for one) promised during the machine's announcement? Would you tweak that trackpad at all? Add a little bulk in exchange for a beefier battery? Paint the whole thing fuschia and make it reek of week-old bananas? Feel free to get as crazy as you'd like in comments below; who knows, maybe Round Rock's tuning in to just see what you have to say.

■Wistron's Snapdragon-powered PurseBook gets demoed

NVIDIA is showing that wacky Mini 1000 / Tegra mashup at CTIA, but Qualcomm's not far behind with its own creative ways to repurpose smartphone silicon into MID and netbook-class devices. Making an appearance at Qualcomm's booth was a prototype PurseBook from Taiwan's Wistron, which stuffs a Snapdragon chipset into a device looking (and weighing) a little bit like a VAIO P. That's where the similarities to the Sony box ends, though, because Qualcomm sees the PurseBook (and devices like it) hitting in the $299 to $499 range -- we'd like to see them even cheaper, truth be told -- and you won't be running Vista here. Instead, you've got a pretty slick Linux distro from ThunderSoft that'll edit Office docs, give you a desktop-class web experience, and connect with social networks, which are the three things most of us spend 90 percent of our PC face time doing anyhow. It's not going to replace your laptop by any stretch, but with a claimed 8 hours of battery life, we could totally see packing this thing as an ultra-lightweight alternative for day trips. Qualcomm expects the PurseBook and devices like it to ship in 2009 -- as does NVIDIA, so we're definitely lining up for a sweet battle royale here. Follow the break for video.

■Inventec's mirasol-equipped V112 smartphone goes on display

We couldn't get the thing to turn on -- prototype buffoonery, zapped battery, or a classic case of trade show jitters, we figure -- but Inventec's curious V112 was on display inside Qualcomm's booth at CTIA. Why Qualcomm, you ask? Well, Qualcomm owns Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, which has been pushing its mirasol display tech for several years now; the main draw is that it's super high-contrast which eliminates the need for a backlight in many situations where a traditional LCD would need a little help, and the WinMo-powered V112 uses a small mirasol strip as a secondary display surrounded by nav controls. Even though we weren't getting any Windows Mobile action, we did manage to engage the mirasol display (also known as "the cool part") where we saw an example of what the V112 might be able to do without turning on the battery-destroying LCD up top: show basic status information and the current time. It's a good idea; we're not sure that the V112's implementation is perfect since there's zero tactility to the d-pad, but you've got to start somewhere, and mirasol could use as many commercial implementations as it can get.

■Pleo-maker Ugobe not totally dead, not totally okay

It certainly seemed like Ugobe was dead-forever a few days ago when we noted that the company's website was seemingly gone and no one was answering the phones, but it's apparently not all bad: the site's back up, and CEO Caleb Chung told the Idaho Business Review today that the company will respond in an "organized way" with a press release coming in the "next few weeks." Uh, okay, but that isn't going to distract anyone from the half-million lawsuit just filed that alleges Pleo and Co. are in breach of contract for failure to pay supplier Arrow Electronics. We'll see how it plays out -- something tells us Pleo's gonna have a hard time dodging this meteor.

■AT&T retracts new terms of service, apologizes

Looks like the uproar over AT&T's recently-tweaked wireless terms of service banning video streaming and p2p activity caused some hasty rethinking in Dallas -- the company just sent us this statement:

The language added on March 30 to AT&T's wireless data service Terms and Conditions was done in error. It was brought to our attention and we have since removed it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Well, that settles that, at least for now -- high fives all around, Internet friends.

■Pre Sprint Navigation app demoed on video

It's not quite a flood, but there's been a steady trickle of Pre news out of CTIA this week, and the latest is this video demo of the Sprint Navigation app. It's pretty familiar stuff if you've ever used the carrier's TeleNav-powered navigation on a device like the Samsung Instinct, but does have a nice coat of webOS interface sheen to it, and let's face it -- we'll take all the Pre demos we can get. ■Former Gizmondo chief Stefan Eriksson lands back in jail, in Sweden

While there's been no shortage of fresh Gizmondo rumors over the past year or so, we haven't heard much of anything about former bigwig Stefan Eriksson, who's known as much for a little car crash as he is for the company he helped bring into infamy. That looks to have changed in a big way this week, however, as Herr Eriksson has now landed back in jail in Sweden, where he's facing a whole slew of new, very serious charges, including extortion, aggravated assault, grand theft, embezzlement, and a firearms violation. No word on a new trial date or anything just yet, but it looks like Eriksson won't be resting easy anytime soon, as a district judge has granted a request to keep him in jail pending an investigation.

Ace of Cake's Duff Goldman and his Charm City Cakes shop pulled out all the f-stops to recreate a (presumably) delicious Nikon D60-shaped pastry for one family to celebrate their photographer father's birthday. The first trial ended up being too small, but instead of turning it into a point-and-shoot or micro four thirds they scrapped that iteration altogether. There's some impressive details here, but best of all (and unfortunately not seen in the gallery below) is the picture of another birthday cake in the viewfinder. Seriously, the only thing that could make this better is if they baked it with a longer lens.

■Eyes-Free shell for Android actually delivers on its name

There's certainly no shortage of means to customize your Android experience, but there's few tweaks as innovative as this new Eyes-Free shell developed by Charles Chen and T.V. Raman., which makes the handset more accessible to the blind, or anyone simply looking to make a call without having to divert their attention. As those following Android development may be aware, the underlying code for the shell has actually been available for some time, but it's only just now been made available to general G1-toting public on Android Marketplace. One of the stand-out components is the brilliantly simple dialer, which automatically brings up a 5 no matter where you touch the screen, from which you can then simply slide your finger to dial the rest of the numbers, with an audible click providing some added assurance as you move over the numbers. Things don't stop there, of course, with the shell also able to provide things like single-touch access for the current date and time, audible notifications of battery life and signal strength, and even a mini app that draws on the phone's GPS capabilities to announce your present location. ■Wii MotionPlus can be oversensitive to your needs, say EA devs

The jury's still out on whether or not Nintendo follows our logic and is gonna release the Wii MotionPlus attachment before June 18th, the day Electronic Arts debuts the first compatible game Grand Slam Tennis. Regardless, the developers of that game want you to know that they had to actually to tone down the touted 1:1 responsiveness to make the game playable. We can't say that we blame them -- after all, the air resistance of a Wii remote is slightly different than that of a full tennis racket -- but we'd love to have the option to crank up that sensitivity and see just how unstable it really is. So when do we a chance to find out for ourselves, eh Nintendo?

■ガジェットを防水加工するGolden Shellbackコーティング、個人向けサービス開始

完全に水没した状態でもちゃんと動くiPod touchのデモを公開していたGolden Shellbackが一般向けのサービス受付を開始しました。Northeast Maritime Institute社の提供するGolden Shellbackコーティングは、携帯電話やiPodといった電子機器の表面全体に透明な被膜を施すことにより防水・防沫化するサービス。

コーティング材の具体的な組成についてはあまり解説がないものの、真空蒸着により厚さ1マイクロメートル〜の透明な保護層を構成するとされていることから、工業用で一般に使われているパリレンコーティングのような技術であると考えられます。つまり最初から防水仕様の機器のようにパッキンで水を防ぐのではなく、端子部などを除くサーフェイス全体に被膜を作って防水化する方法。

今回受付が始まった個人用サービスでは、1台につきスマートフォンのBlackBerry PeralではUS$120、iPod shuffleは60ドル、iPod touchなら 120ドル、GarminのGPS etrexが75ドルといった価格になっています。iPhoneには今のところ非対応。シャッフルの加工費が1GBモデルの本体価格49ドル / 5800円より高くなっているのは万が一水に濡らした際の対策としてはかなり本末転倒な気もしますが、雨や汗でも安心して使えて小型、iTunesが使えるプレーヤー 110ドルと考えるユーザーには便利かもしれません。防沫 iPod touchはたぶんシャワー中もネットから離れられない・動画が観たい人向け。

なおGolden Shellbackの概要説明では水没にも耐えるとされているものの、実際の保証規定では「雨・霧など水分への軽度の暴露」まで、「JIS 7 (IPX 7)相当として販売されるプロダクトのみ水深1m ・30分までの水没」に耐えることを保証すると表現されています。また一度蒸着させた被膜は当然ながら基本的に剥がせず(こすり取るしかない)、本来のメーカー保証からもおそらく改造扱い。続きは水没状態で動くするiPod touchのデモ。

■iPhone / iPod touchでLinuxの起動に成功、Androidも視野

面白くなってまいりました。非公式 iPhone-devチームのplanetbeing 氏がiPhone/ iPod touchにLinuxカーネル 2.6を移植、パッケージ一式と動画デモを公開しています。多くの携帯電話で使われ携帯ゲーム機にすら移植されているLinuxですが、iPhoneでの起動はアップルしか知らないハードウェア部分のリバースエンジニアリングが必要な偉業。現在のところはカーネルが動いて画面が描ける・シリアル over USB通信ができる・NANDの読み込みだけができるといった初期段階です。

逆にいえばタッチも入力も拾えなければ無線LANもつかえず音も鳴らない、もちろん電話としても使えないアプリ以前ながら開発者の意気は高く、Linux移植に詳しい協力者とくにAndroidの経験がある開発者を募集しています。いずれはAndroid on iPhoneというなんだか分からない状態も実現できそうです。必要ファイルと手順説明のダウンロードはリンク先から、続きはデモ動画。

■MSIの新ネットブックはWind U115、ハイブリッドストレージ＆Atom Z採用

人気ミニノート MSI Windに次世代機Wind U115 / U110が登場します。フランスでおこなわれたMSIのプレゼンによれば、U115は現行のU100とおなじ10インチ1024 x 600ディスプレイを備えつつ、ネットブック標準のAtom N270ではなく、デルInspiron Mini 12などと同じAtom Z530プロセッサおよび1GB / 2GBメモリを採用したモデル。MSI Wind Netbookの新機種としてはU100をベースに内蔵3Gやビジネス向けの筐体デザインを採用した「Wind 2」ことWind U120がありますが、U115はプロセッサからして新しくなった新世代にあたります。

U115のもうひとつの特徴は、小容量のSSDと大容量のHDDを組みあわせた「ハイブリッドストレージ」を搭載すること。これはランダムアクセスに強いSSDにOSを、容量の大きいHDDにデータを載せることを想定しています。容量は8GB SSD + 80GB HDDから、16GB + 120GB、32GB + 160GBまで。そのほかの基本仕様は802.11b/g/n 無線LAN、Bluetooth v2.0+EDR、1.3Mまたは2Mピクセルウェブカメラ、4 in 1 メモリカードリーダー、USB 2.0 x3、8 〜 10時間駆動 6セルバッテリー、重さ約1.1kgなど。

またU115とおなじAtom Z530ながら1GBメモリ固定、ハイブリッドではなくHDDのみ仕様のU110モデルの情報もあります。そのほか披露されたのはAtom N270のデスクトップ Wind Nettop、VESAマウントでPCモニタの裏に設置できるWind Boxなど。仕様は続きに掲載。

■Xbox 360、さらに低消費電力＆フラッシュストレージ内蔵の「Jasper」基板登場

先ほど第一報をお伝えしたXbox 360の新基板「Jasper」は各フォーラムでユーザーによる検証が進みほぼ確認といえる段階になりました。上はXbox-SceneフォーラムのMaddage氏が撮影した新基板の写真。また付属のACアダプタが150W品になっていることから推測されるシステム全体の消費電力低下・低発熱化に加えて、新基板の「アーケード」モデルには新たに内蔵フラッシュメモリストレージの追加が確認されています。

従来の「アーケード」モデルはHDDユニットが別売りになっているため前面スロットに挿入するメモリーユニットが同梱されていましたが、新「アーケード」では基板上に256MBのフラッシュメモリが載っており、ユーザーはメモリユニットと同様にゲームのセーブファイルやXbox LIVE関連の情報を保存しておけるようになりました。(といってもユーザーエリアは256MBよりさらに狭いため大きなダウンロードコンテンツは入りません)。

Jasper (と思われる新内部設計)が確認されているのは現在のところ「アーケード」モデルのみ。おそらくは米国と世界の年末商戦に向けて徐々に切り替わってゆくものと考えられます。続きは新アーケードを起動して内蔵MUを表示する動画。まあ低消費電力といっても現行「Falcon」世代のACアダプタから25W低くなっているだけの相対的なものではありますが、国内での流通開始が気になるところです。

今年1月のCESで披露されたゼンハイザーのロスレスワイヤレスヘッドホンMX W1がいよいよ日本に上陸します。MX W1は転送に新興規格 Kleerを採用したワイヤレスヘッドホン。広帯域かつBluetooth比で低消費電力を謳うKleerの採用により、16bit/44.1KHzの「ロスレス」転送および左右のユニットをつなぐケーブルすらない完全ワイヤレスを実現した製品です。

Kleerテクノロジーのトランスミッタを内蔵したプレーヤや機器は約一年経った現在でもあまり増えていませんが、MX W1にはiPodなどの機器に接続できる小型のトランスミッタが付属します。ヘッドホン本体はそれなり大ぶりなものの意外と軽く、耳の穴だけでなく二点で挟むようにホールドするため軽い装着感も特徴です。米国では600ドル程度ですでに販売中。国内では12月に、価格は約6万円前後で登場予定。下にはCES 2008当時のギャラリー、続きには最近自分ブランドのお茶をプロデュースしたらしいVeronica「ベロニカたん」 Belmontによる動画リポートを再掲しておきます。

■Eee PC 901にSSD増量＆高速化モデル901-16G

国内向けEee PC 901にアップデートモデルが登場します。本日発表されたEee PC 901-16Gは内蔵SSDを高速化、容量を16GBのシングルドライブ構成にしたモデル。またプレミアム機種のEee PC S101で導入された高速起動技術XpressPathも採用しており、起動シーケンスの一部を省略することでOSの起動時間を短縮しています。

Eee PC 901のSSD高速化モデルといえば最近欧州で901-GOの出荷が始まりましたが、ほぼ同等仕様と思われるそちらの転送速度はシーケンシャルリード 87MB/s・ライト 45MB/s程度、ランダムアクセスも大幅に改善というベンチマークがありました。

そのほかの基本仕様はほぼ現行901-Xのまま。ただし自慢のバッテリー駆動時間は901-Xの公称 8.3時間から8.1時間へと微妙に短くなっています。発売は29日から、価格はオープン。店頭予想 5万4800円くらい。

■iPhone 2.2 SDKに隠れたビデオ出力API、アプリのTV表示が可能

App StoreのアプリでもおなじみErica Sadun氏のiPhone SDK講座より。先日一般提供となったiPhone 2.2ソフトウェアに対応したSDK v2.2にはドキュメントの用意されていない隠しAPIがあり、サードパーティーアプリのビデオ出力が可能になっていることが分かりました。

具体的にはMPTVOutWindow クラスを使うことで、市販のビデオ出力ケーブルを使ってリアルタイムにアプリの画面を出力できます。ただ出力中はタッチ入力が無効になってしまうため、今のところ公式SDK (の隠れたAPI)だけを使ってテレビ出力ゲームなどを作るのは困難。ただなぜか加速度計は生きているため、続きに掲載したデモは本体を傾けると画面の矢印が動くという内容です。Ericaさんいわくプレゼンテーションの送り・戻しくらいはシャッフルで実現できるのでは、とのことですが、おおっぴらにTV出力を謳ってApp Storeを通るかはまた別の話です。

■Xbox 360の新基板 Jasper、今度こそ出荷開始？

9月末あたりにいくつか報告があり確認待ちになっていた「Jasper 」Xbox 360の流通が今度こそ始まったようです。Jasperは他のゲーム機とおなじく内部的な改良と低コスト化を繰り返すXbox 360の基板設計のうち、CPU / GPUともに65nmプロセス品になりメモリもシュリンクされたバージョン(一年前の記事：Xbox 360、次の基板は「Jasper」来年末商戦向け)。現行最新世代の「Falcon」では90nm品が使われているGPUもシュリンクされるため、製造はさらに安く消費電力・発熱はさらに低くなると考えられます。

今回の「Jasper」目撃報告でも明らかに違うチップの接写といった分かりやすい証拠はまだ挙がっていないものの、付属のACアダプタが現行よりさらに20Wほど出力の下がった150W品になり、しかもACアダプタと本体の接続コードに互換性がない(大容量の旧アダプタはJasper本体で使えるが150W品は現行本体で使えない)ことが状況証拠と考えられています。150W ACアダプタの付属していた本体のデータは製造日 2008-10-23、ロットナンバー 0843X、チームFDOU。

ただしFalconへの移行時にそうだったように報告のあったひとつのロットナンバーや日付だけですぐに判別できるものではなく、また「Jasper」「Valhalla」といった名称もあくまでアナリストが関係筋から聞き取ったとされる内部コードネームであり互換性などの製品仕様に違いはないため、マイクロソフトに電話してもたぶん教えてくれません。国内でいつからJasperに切り替わるのか・発熱やファンノイズにどの程度効いてくるのかはさておき、New Xbox ExperienceでHDDインストールが可能になりDVDドライブの轟音と決別できる！と喜んだものの本体ファンだけでもぜんぜん静音じゃなかった、というかたには気になる話です。続きは「しきい」の形状が微妙に違うACアダプタプラグの写真。

■バッファロー、インテル製2.5インチSSDと環境移行ツールをバンドル販売

バッファローから、インテル製の2.5インチSSDと環境移行用ツールをセットにした製品SHD-NSMR80Gが発表されました。SSDはMLC NANDフラッシュ採用タイプで容量 80GB。バッファローの製品ページによればシーケンシャルリードが約253MB/sとされていることから、ドライブとしては秋ごろから国内でも販売されているメインストリーム向けモデル X25-Mまたは同等品のようです。

同梱されている「環境移行ツール」はWindows用ソフトウェアのAcronis Migrate Easyやパーティション変更のDisk Director LEなど。OCZ Core Series V2やバッファローSHD-NSUMシリーズのようにSSD本体にUSB端子を備えていたり、あるいはSATA / USB 変換ケーブルが付属するものではありません。出荷は11月下旬、希望小売価格は9万9900円 (税抜き)、オンライン直販価格 9万1800円。

■サムスンから組み込みXP＋Athlon 64 X2入り40〜82型タッチパネル液晶

日本サムスンがデジタルサイネージ向けの業務用液晶タッチパネル SyncMaster TSnシリーズ 4モデルを発売しました。サイズは400TSn (40型) から46型、70型、820TSn (82型)まで。いずれもWindows XP Embedded SP2にAMD Athlon 64 X2 3400プロセッサ、RS780グラフィック、1GB RAMと4GBのフラッシュメモリ、イーサネット端子とUSB 2.0 x3といった仕様のコントローラを備え、電子広告や案内板などのアプリケーションを想定した製品です。

タッチパネルは赤外線再帰反射検出方式。日本サムスンからはすでに9月に発表されており(プレスリリース)、40型と46型は10月末から、70型と82型は11月末からの受注生産となっています。改めて掲載したのは国内での出荷および韓国サムスンの発表会がおこなわれたためであり、上のすばらしい写真の製品以外の要素とは特に関係ございません。

■巻物USBハブ＋マウスパッド＋スピーカー

Roll-up mouse pad encloses a hub, speakers, and our hearts


ひさびさに「よかれと思ってあれもこれも」系USB複合機能アイテムの話題。USBガジェット系オンラインストアで販売されているRoll-up Mouse Pad With Speaker + Hubは円筒形の本体に4ポート USBハブ、左右の端がスピーカー、ヘッドホン端子と外部音声入力端子を備えた製品です。だめ押しに本体に巻きとれるマウスパッドつき。

巻物ありきで円筒形になったのか、ポート直列デザインとステレオスピーカーの分離のため細長い形状なのだから「ここにぐるっと巻けばもう一味加わるのでは？」的発想で追加されたのかは定かでないものの、いろいろ多機能＋巻き取り収納は実用とあまり関係ない「便利っぽさ」を主張する良デザインです。価格はUS$20くらい。

■バッファローからWiFi ＆DLNA対応の8型デジタルフォトフレーム

バッファローから、無線LAN接続機能を搭載したデジタルフォトフレーム PF-50WGが発表されました。液晶ディスプレイは8インチ 800 x 600。ユーザーエリア約85MBの内蔵ストレージと側面にマルチカードリーダを搭載します。802.11b/g 無線LANはDLNAプロトコルに対応しており、ネットワーク内のNASやPC、レコーダなどDLNA対応のメディアサーバ機能を持った機器から写真を再生できるのが特徴です。また無線LANルータ経由でインターネット接続してFlickrやPicasaといったオンラインフォトサービスからも写真を取得可能。

■HP、デュアルコアAtom搭載の小型デスクトップ Mini Qを発表

販売再開がアナウンスされたAsusのEee BoxやMSIのWind PCなど、Atomプロセッサ採用の小型デスクトップがHPからも登場します。写真は台湾でHP Compaqブランドから発表された「Mini Q」Presario 2020 / 2030。Eee TopやNetonのようなタッチスクリーンのオールインワンではなく、写真のモデル女性が抱えているのが本体のミニデスクトップです。

仕様は2030がデュアルコアのAtom 330 (1.6GHz)、2GB RAM、160GB HDD、光学ドライブ、Windows Vista Home。下位の2020のほうはシングルコアのAtom 230、1GB RAM、Windows XP Homeとなっています。価格は2030が1万2900台湾圓 / 日本円で約3万7000円。2020は9900台湾圓 / 2万8000円くらい。なぜオレンジがテーマなのか、「100%原汁原味」が何を意味するのかは不明。

■Imagination、「国際的な家電大手」にPowerVRをライセンス ・ PSP2に採用？

SoC向けグラフィックスコアのIPベンダーであるImagination Technologiesが、「国際的な家電大手」と次世代グラフィックプロセッサのIPライセンス契約に合意したと発表しました。

イマジネーションはグラフィックスコア PowerVRファミリの開発とライセンスをおこなう企業。PowerVRといえば古くはセガのドリームキャストに採用されたり不人気なPC用ビデオカードでも知られていましたが、現在ではさまざまなチップに組み込まれてたとえば iPhoneをはじめとする各社のスマートフォン、インテルのチップセット統合グラフィック、あるいはオープン携帯ゲーム機ことPandora (Ti OMAP 3530)などあらゆるところで使われています。

今回の発表は「近日リリースされるイマジネーションの POWERVR SGX グラフィックス プロセッサ ファミリーの新高性能製品」について、「国際的な家電大手」としか明かされていないパートナーとライセンス契約を結んだことにより、「POWERVR テクノロジーが大量生産の家電分野におけるリーチが拡大」を期待するという内容です。

さて、ここまでは公式な発表と背景説明ですが、EETimesでは詳しい筋からの情報として、この「国際的な家電大手」はソニーであり、近日発表という新グラフィックプロセッサコア はPSPの後継機に採用されると推測しています。問題の新グラフィックスコアはおそらくSGX55x。ただライセンス契約で合意とはいってもPowerVR SGXというひとつの製品や規格があるわけではなく、実際に組み込まれるチップの設計・構成により大きく変わるため、仮に「PSP2」説が正しくても現時点で詳細が分かるわけではありません。とはいえ、新PSPのグラフィックはiPhone (とおそらくは後継機)や Pandoraとおなじベースになる(かもしれない)のは興味深い話です。
