Meridian announces DSP7200 speakers
Filed under:

Meridian logoMeridian announced the successor to their DSP7000 speakers, the DSP7200. Meridian has always been happy to forge their own path in coming up with technical solutions for digital audio, and the DSP7200 is no exception. These are digital active speakers, meaning a digital bitstream is fed to the speakers and D/A conversion and amplification tasks are handled internally. There are real-world advantages to this approach -- vastly simplified cabling (both audio signal and control signals are passed around via standard daisy-chained CAT5), signals are kept in the digital domain as long as possible, and all processing can be done in the digital realm. The downside is the whole-system approach you have to commit to, which discourages mix and match. Membership in the Meridian club at this level isn't cheap, either. Pricing for the new DSP7200 was not announced, but the DSP7000 speakers being replaced cost about $25000 per pair. Ouch. We'll keep moving down the aisle to some of their other offerings.

DVD Forum approves 51GB HD DVD?

We haven't yet seen any official confirmation of the news, but it's been reported that the 51GB triple-layer single-sided HD DVD Toshiba first announced at CES has been approved by the DVD Forum. (The last we heard about this, the new format had been submitted for approval.) Of course, this might mean consumers will need new players to read 51GB HD DVDs, which could potentially damage the format more than help it; the last thing either HD DVD or Blu-ray need right now is to fork hardware compatibility with their own embattled formats, so we'll hope what we've heard about 2nd and 3rd gen HD DVD players being able to read 51GB discs via firmware upgrade is true. Also up to bat: the "twin" dual-layer DVD / HD DVD combo-disc was also approved, with one 5GB DVD layer and two 17GB HD DVD layers. We'll let you know when the DVD forum officially confirms (or denies) the news.

[Thanks, Ken]

China announces CH-DVD, a new high definition DVD standard
Filed under:

As if two different high definition DVD standards weren't enough for the world, China has gone ahead and said "actually, it is, at least for the western portion of it." The Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center has announced CH-DVD, a high definition DVD standard based on the DVD Forum's HD DVD, but with additional Chinese-owned technology tacked on. This additional technology takes the form of advanced copy protection designed to prevent the spread of pirated content. A new foundation called the China High Definition DVD Industry Association will be promoting the format, with the aim of launching a hardware player in 2008, and getting content producers on board before that.

Netstreams announces CinemaLinX IP-based home theater system
Filed under: , ,

Netstreams has announced an IP streaming home theater system called the CinemaLinX, which does exactly as it says on the tin: it streams audio to IP speakers dotted around your house. Demoing the home theater box for the first time at CEDIA, the CinemaLinX accepts Dolby or DTS signals, but not higher quality standards like Dolby TrueHD or DTS MA. The benefit for IP speakers over regular dumb speakers is that it provides more parameters -- just what the audiophile market craves -- like auto calibrated equalizers and far simpler multi-room support: Netstreams's solution has thankfully tackled the usual latency issues with IP speaker setups by building the CinemaLinX with lags of around 1ms. No word on ship dates or prices yet, but we'll let you know as soon as there is.

Bryston intros 1000 Watt 28B-SST amp
Filed under:

Bryston 28B-SST amplifier

More Bryston gear from the "overdesign, just in case" school of thought. The pictured hulk is the new 1000 Watt 28B-SST mono amplifier. Even when the design goal is to make an amp that can drive any speaker in the world, this seems like overkill. Bryston assures us this beast isn't just brawn; it also gets the nuances right. And with specs like a -115dB noise floor, and total harmonic distortion below 0.001%, we'd believe them. Price is securely in the "if you have to ask..." realm, but you do get the standard 20 year Bryston warranty for your $7500.

Pioneer unveils new Elite SC-09TX receiver
Filed under: ,

Pioneer SC-09TX receiver

At Pioneer, there's Elite and there's "flagship" Elite. The SC-09TX is Pioneer's first flagship receiver in almost three years, and they've pulled out all the stops. You know the laundry list of goodies is drool-worthy: 1080p upscaling, HDMI 1.3, MCACC auto calibration, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD, for example. THX Loudness Plus is also onboard, so you can hear all the details in the soundtrack without having to crank it up to THX reference levels. Not that you couldn't get to those volume levels, though -- all seven channels can be driven continuously at 200 Watts via a custom ICEPower (an offshoot of Bang & Olufson) Class-D amplifier. To make sure the signal being fed to the amp section is up to snuff, Pioneer has put their Sampling Rate Converter inside -- think of it as a 192kHz audio scaler. If you want one of these receivers like we do, you've got a few months to save up -- the SC-09TX drops this winter at $7000.

KEF intros new XQ Sseries loudspeakers
Filed under:

KEF XQ 10If the speakers in your HT rig are summed up by "sound great, look terrible" and you want need to move into "sound great, look great" territory, then KEF's new XQ Series speakers are worth checking out. The updated XQ Series made its debut at CEDIA and enjoys some technology "trickle-down" from KEF's Reference Series; notably the new Uni-Q driver that covers midrange, tweeter and hypertweeter duties in one tidy package. The speakers also inherit a little bit from KEF's over-the-top Muon in the form of milled aluminum front baffle. In the looks department, the cabinetry is available in a choice of three high-gloss, "furniture grade," natural wood veneers: birds-eye maple, khaya mahogany, and piano black. With five models in the range (XQ 10 pictured), you can make sure every single channel in your "wall of sound" matches. Prices range from $1400/pair for the XQ 10 bookshelf up to $3400/pair for the floorstanding XQ 40. Available September 2007.

Polk Audio I-Sonic ES2 features iTunes song tagging
Filed under:

Already, new peripherals are popping up to take advantage of the new features in Apple's updated iPod line-up, with Polk Audio's I-Sonic Entertainment System 2 packing a poor man's equivalent of the Starbucks song purchase feature over in-store WiFi. When songs are playing over the built-in HD Radio, users can press a tag button, which creates a custom playlist on docked iPods, allowing songs to be purchased later when at a computer. The ES2 also features XM Connect & Play capability, a CD/DVD drive for audio playback, an alarm clock mode, and 360-degree sound, whatever the hell that is. The ES2 hits next month for $499.
