Update on NFL's Panties: Still Bunched

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 18:37:48 EST

panties.jpgResponding to what happened a couple days ago, churches around the country have put the kibbutz on "traditional" Super Bowl parties while the NFL continues to put the fear out, "standing by its interpretation of copyright law." Apparently, enough private homeowners are worried about Ray Lewis busting down their door that Slate came to the rescue, explaining the "copyright law" the NFL keeps referring to.

The 55-inch limit cited by the NFL applies only to public showings of the Super Bowl, not private gatherings. According to U.S. copyright law, Josh is in the clear so long as he doesn't take his gigantic TV to a public place, or invite "a substantial number of persons" to his house--more than a normal circle of family and social acquaintances.

While the Explainer goes on to say that "you can show the game to a big crowd, provided you're not charging people" and are showing it on "a single receiving apparatus of a kind commonly used in private homes," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that even admission-free "mass out-of-home viewings" are a no-no, and they will bust your ass. Hard.

So basically you should watch the game at home on your own big-ass TV, but don't tell anybody about it. Or better yet, watch it with your eyes closed.

Top 10ish Wooden Gadgets Gallery

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 16:00:02 EST

Personal goal: complete this post with no phallic allusions.

Wood is a timeless construction medium that will be around long after silver/white/black finishes are things of the past. So why don't we see more wood in electronics? I used to think it was for durability, but if you hadn't noticed, current build materials are crap. No gadget is meant to last, let alone avoid scratches and be around long enough for a refinishing. Maybe wood reminds that man's collective experience with his favorite gadget is a fleeting one; maybe the trees are laughing at us.

So enjoy this gallery of wooden tech - some of it beautiful, some of it tacky, some of it reminding us of boners.

Wii: Hold on Tight, Best Non-Superbowl Commercial

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 15:15:24 EST

Here is an extremely well-done Wii video, that you might take for an official Nintendo commercial until the, say, last 3 seconds. I caught up with the creator from Super 78 (a professional CGI movie company) and this is what he had to say about the clip:
I really love the Wii and I had been reading these stories about Wii controllers flying out of peoples hands. We had some down time at the office so I got together with one of the animators and I sketched out a storyboard of the spot. In the board the controller is this high energy maniac and the nun-chuck just wants to get away. So our most talented animator Michael Smith created this fun spot there is a lot of character...This was done by us, Super 78, using our own resources, no agency was involved, no money changed hands. I am hoping that you could post it so we can see if it catches fire.
Down time at the office? I could use some help on these posts, you know, when you aren't making kick ass Wiimovies.

Double Decker Carousel For Sale

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 14:35:29 EST

892a.jpg

Don't even pretend that you aren't interested. This 1994 Bertazzon double decker carousel is in very good condition, seats 68 and has lots of pretty horsies.

Expect it to set you back $250,000, but just think of the look on your neighbor's face who bought his daughter a Barbie for Christmas. Bonus picture after the jump.

Solar Hummingbird: Worse than the Real Thing

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 13:25:54 EST

f_takaratomy_hummingbird.jpgThe Takaratomy Kotoridayori Humming Bird proves that solar power is not just for calculators and the hopeful/naive who believe it's not too late to stop global warming anymore. Solar technology has found a greater purpose in this world than determining the order of operations or allowing our children to "live" and "eat".

Solar power allows the Humming Bird to sing sporadically through the day, adding a general sense of peace and well-being to co-workers. Plus, the bird senses vibrations from those walking by, and serenades them into tranquility. For a mere $25, you can teach the world to sing, one cubical at a time.

In short, solar technology can torture your coworkers when you are not around.

First Sub-$500 Vista Laptop: But Why?

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 12:50:46 EST

Vistacheap.jpg

The Everex Stepnote VA4101M, offered by Wal-mart, is the world's first Vista-loaded laptop priced under $500 (if you consider the drab Aeroless Vista Basic to be true Vista).

Sporting a 15.4" screen, 1.46Ghz Celeron M processor, 512MB RAM and a 60G HD, this is a fine machine for the price, as long as you take it home and load up your old version of Windows. Actually, scratch that. I've seen how these Wal-mart deals butcher XP, so just avoid them entirely for the time being. This is the tech equivalent of me, with a bucket of Crayolas and a coloring book, claiming to replicate Monet's Waterlilies...except worster.

Cool Cars, (One That Will Be) From the Future

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 11:25:04 EST

p_n-joy1wtmk.jpgOK, it's officially the future. Where are the cool cars? And I don't care what the salesman told you, that Camry's 5-star side crash rating is not "Back to the Future II" technology. And why did you go with baby blue?

Luckily, Peugeot is promoting innovation by holding an Xbox360-sponsored contest with completely open design submissions. Entrants have officially been narrowed down to the top ten, and the first winner will see their 3D fakery come to fully-built fruition.

Hit the jump for the 9 of the most awesome cars you don't see above and look for a Gizmodo hands-on...as soon as they mail us the car.

Uberbed Lift: Stashes Your TV and Shame

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 11:10:09 EST

DSCF0096.jpgWhether you are ashamed for spending your child's tuition on your bedroom television, or ashamed of using said television to watch Friends reruns along with your still-Tivoed episodes of Joey, we're guessing you are on the right track. And you could use the Uberbed Lift to hide your self-loathing (when not in use).

The MK1 Studio Uberbed Lift supports flat panels up to 50" as long as you sleep on a king-sized bed with 8" of clearance. In just 45 seconds, a robotic arm that will later turn on your spouse pulls out your television, positioning the display to whatever angle you feel is optimum. Cable/satellite/DVD can be conveniently stored under your bed as well, where the Boogie Man can change the channel for you since your IR universal remote is officially SOL.

No price, but hit the jump to see some video of the Uberbed Lift in action.

"Is this some kind of joke?"

"Umm...not funny haha, but..."

Apple on iTunes Vista Issues: Just Don't Get Vista

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 09:43:07 EST

itunesno.jpgLooks like iTunes and Vista not wanting to play together goes deeper than we thought. Straight from iTunes tech support:

Apple recommends, however, that customers wait to upgrade Windows until after the next release of iTunes which will be available in the next few weeks.

You gotta love Apple telling you to hold off on updating your whole OS just for iTunes. UAC issues aside, you'd think if they had time to make that spot that's got Bill's blood boiling, they had time to get iTunes ready for the Vista launch.

Giant CPU Heatsink Big as Some Motherboards

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 09:22:38 EST

cm.jpgYou can watercool a hot rig, or you can go for the biggest fan/heatsink CPU combo I've ever seen. The copper block transfers heat to the aluminum fins via 6 heatpipes. The aluminum radiator is cooled by dual 12 CM fans that have the added effect of chilling out the motherboard and anything else in your case.

Also, this is one of the main components in a hovercar.

New Apple Earbuds: Not Just With Shuffles

Sat, 03 Feb 2007 09:00:00 EST

ma070ga_125.jpgWe've already learned many lessons in the Great Quest For New Apple Earbuds, but for those not purchasing a new Shuffle or planning on dropping $30 on "staying hip", what do you do?

Spend $50 on the iPod radio remote. iLounge has confirmed that radio remotes, too, are officially packaged with the updated earbuds. In other words, if you've been hankering for some radio and some new earbuds, you can justify the purchase. Or you could just spend $30 more and get a rainbow Shuffle. Wait, how did I walk into the store planning to spend $30, and now end up spending $80?

Virgin America's Airplanes Play Doom

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 22:15:12 EST

Want even more reason why Virgin America should be approved by the Department of Transportation? Take a look at this video that focuses on the seat-back entertainment on each seat.

The screens are 9-inch and touchscreen, which are powered by an actual individual PC running Linux. These are all interconnected via Ethernet, which grab streaming video off of three file servers in the plane's belly. You can listen to music, watch TV, get pay-per-view movies, or even order food from the touchscreen.

The best part? They ported a bunch of Linux games—including Doom— so you can play it right on the screen.

Thanks Ibelli!

The Original 1983 Microsoft Mouse

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 21:44:24 EST

microsoftmouse.jpgDo you remember the year 1983, when Return of the Jedi was in theaters, The Police were still together, and Travis was still inside his parents' genitalia? Well Gearlog does, because they got their hands on an original 1983 Microsoft Mouse.

The green buttoned mouse was bundled with Microsoft Word, and came with the Life game, Notepad, and a musical tutorial teaching then-noobs how to use a mouse. Look how far they've come since then! Now Microsoft mice sport lasers, charging stations, multiple buttons, Bluetooth, and a scroll wheel, but are just as uncomfortable to use. Good thing their keyboards rock.

Philips Xenium Clamshell Yaps For a Month

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 21:15:09 EST

philips9x9phonesmall.jpgPhilips drops another handset in their Xenium 9@9 cellphone line for those people who never remember to charge their phones. Instead of a candybar form factor, however, this Xenium 9x9 is a clamshell with a brushed metal finish and a 262K OLED display, but still has the ability to last up to 30 days on standby.

Other than the extremely long battery life, there's not much else to the phone. There's a 1.3-megapixel camera, 18MB of internal memory, GSM Tri-Band, and a secondary outside OLED display. Great if you just want a phone, but mediocre if you want to do anything beyond calling.

WiFi Liberator Ends Tyranny of Pay-Per-Use Wireless

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 21:00:00 EST

liberator_pic.jpgNothing is more annoying than plopping down in a coffee shop with your laptop and trying to connect to the WiFi only to be told that you need to pay some ridiculous amount like $9.99 to use it for 24 hours. I'm buying your overpriced coffee, the least you could do is let me use your WiFi without gouging me for a quarter of what I pay per month at home.

Well, this WiFi Liberator has cheapskates like me in mind. The sneaky device is designed to "liberate" pay-per-use wireless networks, hijacking the signal and distributing it for all to enjoy. It even has a built-in moochproofer, forcing anyone who uses it to share their access with those around them. Sounds great to me, who cares if its legality is clearly dubious? Bring on the WiFi Liberator!

Microsoft Denies Cracked Screens from Charging: Send In Those Pics

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 20:31:27 EST

zunescreen.jpgWe've been hearing rumors on a possible problem with the Zune havings its screen cracked due to an expanding battery from leaving it charging all night. We haven't run into this problem ourselves, and Microsoft's official statement is that they haven't seen any evidence that the screen is being cracked from the battery. The most likely cause, they say, is the player being dropped onto the screen.

But how about our readers? Is your Zune cracked up thanks to your battery? If so, email in the pictures to tips at giz. We'll get to the bottom of this.

Verizon's First Entry Level Smartphone Comes as a Clamshell

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 20:29:28 EST

Verizon%20PN.jpg It's rare you find a cheap smartphone and it's even rarer you find one shaped as a clamshell, but that's pretty much what Verizon has managed to do with the PN-820. It's nothing to swoon over looks-wise, but it runs Windows Mobile 5, has EV-DO support, and its storage is expandable via a microSD slot. Priced at $149, spot on for anyone who wants to dip their toes into the smartphone ocean without going overboard.

And really, at a reasonable price like $6,872 you'd be a fool not to buy one.

Super Bowl Dolphins Stadium Site Hacked, Spreading Malware

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 19:15:47 EST

dolphinhacked.jpgSuper Bowl fans who are looking up info on the Dolphin Stadium site from a Windows machine may want to make sure they're using Firefox instead of IE. Apparently the site's been hacked and is hosting two known Windows Security flaws.

If you're running an unpatched Windows machine, your computer will connect to some server in China to download a trojan, which gives some very nerdy dudes complete access to your machine. So those of you who want to fetch info from dolphinstadium.com, make sure you've got the latest patches or are running a Mac/Linux machine. Either that or your wife's going to be pretty peeved when she finds some actual dolphin porn on your computer. Poor Flipper.

D-Link WiFi Router Disguised as Smoke Detector

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 19:06:13 EST

11608_large.jpgDo you have a problem with icky gadgets in your house? As a Giz reader, you'd be unlikely to judge a router for looking router-ish, but just in case you are the type of closet geek that likes wires to be threaded and not seen, here's a 802.11 b/g router that looks like a smoke detector. I'd like to say this is cute, but thats it.

What would really be useful is a router with working detector that emails the fire department when your house is on ablaze. D-Link: Make it So.

Buffalo Laptop Mouse With Retractable USB Cord

buffalomouse.jpgBusiness travelers have often chosen those tiny laptop mice that work decently but make your hand into THE CLAW. Well, this Buffalo Laptop Mouse is no different, but has a nice retractable USB cord to make your life easier.

As tight on space as you are, we'd recommend just getting a regular desktop-sized mouse to use with your laptop instead of one of these small and not-quite-as-useful laptop mice.

Japan's Super Sink Can Do It All Well, Almost

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 18:30:00 EST

Where else but Japan would you find a sink like this? It's got basically every sink-related bathroom item built right in, with motion sensors for each. Sure, it's got water, soap, and a hand dryer all built-in, but, as Travis asked, can you pee in it? Keep working at it, Japan. You're almost there.

WXI477 Waterproof Cordless Phone Lets You Yap It Up In The Shower

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 18:15:44 EST

unidenwater2.jpgLike the Fujitsu waterproof phone, Uniden's WXI477 lets you take your talk into the shower. Unlike the Fujitsu, you're going to feel like a dunce taking this out of the house, since it's just a 5.8 GHz cordless phone.

The WX works when you're in the bath, in the shower, in the pool, or even when you're dunking your head in the sink to train holding your breath, David Blaine style. But really, do you need to take your conversations into the shower with you? Are you that dirty or is the person you're talking to that important that you can't hold off for a few minutes while you do one or the other?

Is Hollywood Losing its Infatuation with the iPod?

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 18:05:08 EST

k5fergie.jpgThere used to be a time when you'd see Apple's iPod in practically every new music video. Everyone from Snoop Dogg to 50 Cent could be seen flashing their shiny white player, much in the same manner that Paris Hilton whored herself out to the Sidekick. But lately it seems the iPod has been getting the shaft from Hollywood who has been caught holding hands with other players. Take for instance Fergie's "Fergalicious" video. As painful as it is to watch (seriously, don't Google it), she has the brains (or maybe her agent does) to carry a Samsung YP-K5. Then there's...

h10_24.jpg 24. In an old episode, we see an iRiver H10 being used to detonate a bomb. Even 007 settled for a Sony Ericsson in place of an iPod in last year's Casino Royale. As much as I like my iPod, I find it refreshing that Hollywood is welcoming other players into the foray—players that deserve the attention (ok, so the H10 is old, but still, it was a good player back in the day). Now how long before we see a Zune in a music video and which video will that be?

DS Lite Mini Card Holder

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 17:45:37 EST

dsholder.jpgEssentially a Mini Me for your DS Lite, this Mini-DS holder holds your precious DS games so they don't slip out of your pocket when you're leaning over to snap your upskirt pics.

As cute as having a little DS is, the fact that it can only hold two DS games makes this kinda iffy. However, if one of those games is the DS-Xtreme DS Media Enhancer, then you've got no problems. Plus, it's only $7.90.

By the by, do any readers have any recommendations for a GBA "game enhancer" for the DS? Turns out the DS-Xtreme only handles DS games and not GBA games.

Sony CPF-IP001 is First iPod-Only Speaker Dock

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 17:32:48 EST

CPFIP001.jpgSony has finally succumbed to the power of the iPod with the CPF-IP001 compact iPod speaker system for all dockable iPods. It is fairly unique because the external subwoofer is as large as the speaker system itself. Kind of strange coming from Sony, especially after seeing their portable media accessories focus on Bluetooth at CES last month. The CPF-IP001 carries a $250 price tag, which is about $100 too much for a portable iPod speaker system like this.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

Fri, 02 Feb 2007 17:10:44 EST

ilounge-feb-1.jpgThis week at iLounge: Thanks to Apple, the week's biggest iPod news was "colored aluminum," as four new iPod shuffle colors - orange, pink, green, and blue - joined the earlier silver 1GB shuffle at $79 price points. For all the details, check out our photo gallery, updated iPod shuffle review, and 5 key facts you want to know.

Stuck with a silver shuffle? Good news: we've reviewed a bunch of different color-shifting options, including a wide variety of cheap snap-on shields from JAVOedge. JAVO's ClearCase lets you orange out your silver shuffle, and its metal Shields offer green, blue, pink and red options - not bad for their very low prices. Taking a different angle, Power Support's highly protective shuffle Silicone Jacket also found its way under the review microscope this week, and was named the best case for the second-generation shuffle.

Also: For those looking to update their earphones, we tested two new $100 options - Sweden's impressive d-JAYS in-canal earphones, and iSkin's stylish new
